I've honestly never heard of the alcohol trick that you are referring to, and from what I know about burners, that simply will not work. There is no standard format for DVD burners at this time. It's something that has been battled over for years and the manufacturers cannont agree because everyone feels like they have the best format. Having said that, the Sony DRU will burn in both +RW amd -RW formats.

You need a DVD burner ;)

You can't burn a DVD with a CD-R/RW drive. No amount of software finagling will do it. Your hardware is not capable of doing it.

WHat you can do is burn movie files onto a CD (not a DVD) in a special format most modern DVD players will recognize: VCD (Video CD) or SVCD (Super Video CD). Those are CD-ROM formats.

As for burning an MPEG as a VCD/SVCD (which might be what you're really asking), maybe yes, maybe no. Try http://www.vcdhelp.com/.
