I bought a cd/mp3 player for my car. Now I need to know how to make mp3's. I know I need "ripping" software but what should I get? Free would be great but if free means that it will be poor quaility or hard to use than I would rather buy the software. Any ideas???

do you own any cd burning program like Nero or Roxio(easy cd creator)?

if you do, both of those allow cd ripping, and I know Nero has an available plugin (not expensive) that lets you rip to mp3PRO format as well.

if not there are plenty of free programs that will rip cd's to mp3, i'd recommend trying a few out (ripping the same song) ans see if you find a difference in quality

I have Roxio easy cd creator 5 but did not get the upgrade. I can convert mp3 to cd with Roxio, but I do not think I can convert cd to mp3.

To rip CDs to MP3s I use a program called CDex, it's a free download, I believe I got it at download.com

If you dislike AudioGrabber, you can try CDEx. It too will rip an audio CD to mp3 files. Exact Audio Copy is good, too, but I've not used it in a long time.

Note that Halo's instruction apply to Nero Express, which is integrates with Nero but for some reason not a part of Nero Burning ROM (the non-express version).

so it is ... me way way too lazy to use the classic version ( cheers for the correction mate )

if you use Roxio and the classic method is ( bear in mind I used V6 of Roxio ) File > New Project > MP3 player Disk

hey man you'll all set with Roxio... instead of selecting "Create Music CD" off the Project Selector prompt, just select "Create Data CD"... this will burn the songs in mp3 format... You should be able to fit about 140 mp3's on a 700 mb CD-R/W... i just purchased an mp3 compatible receiver for my car and plan on burning mp3 CD's using Roxio a well...

i could have sworn Roxio also had mp3 ripping capabilities... but it's been a while since i dumped it and got nero.

look for a "save tracks" feature.

cerulean, i'm a bit confused... are you trying to burn mp3 files onto a blank CD-R/W or are you trying to rip regular music CD's into mp3 files and then onto a CD-R/W... ?

@Midget, hes trying to do the latter-- rip his old CD's into mp3's and then burn them onto mp3 discs... so he doesnt have to carry around 1000 cds ;)

@Cerulean-- when cdex or any ripping program rips the tracks into mp3, it stores them in a folder on your C drive (or main hard drive). I am not sure what the default folder for cdex is..maybe someone who uses it can tell you.

once you locate the newly ripped mp3's, open up Roxio and make a new data cd project (i'm not sure if it specifies 'create mp3 disc' but a simple data cd shold do the trick). Then just add the mp3's you'd like onto the disc and burn away.
