I found another with the same problems
this is what mine is doing..

I am setting up a friend's new XP machine which has a DVD/RW drive in it.
When I place a driver CD or other software CD in it it doesn't autoplay. I
have to open explorer and find a setup file and hope that I chose the right
one. The friend has no clue how to do this. Under Properties, autoplay, on
the drive there isn't an option of what to do if a software installation CD
is inserted - only what to do with music, pictures, video files, mixed
content or movies. I thought it might be mixed content but none of the
    options are to autoplay.
If I right-click the drive I have an option to autoplay, but my friend just
wants it the way his old WinXP machine did it - it just runs when he puts a
    disk in.
How do I fix this for him?

    Greetings, John67.

Try this Microsoft Fix-it, just to get it out of the way: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9740811 (assuming that's not the auto fix you've already run).

Is the drive listed in Device Manager? If so, are there any flags or error messages?

While in Device Manager, you might also try uninstalling the drive and restarting - Windows should reinstall the device. See if your symptoms change.

The MS KB article describing other steps to take is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330135

    thank you caliban,
i got to the last one and it still didn't work,
the window pops up with the cd contents labeled with like a, c, d, L, ..
and when i try to run the auto fix, the autoplay v2 event doesn't want to repair ,but the legacy autoplay event is ok..
    driving me crazy..

Re: CD won't autoplay in DVD/RW drive tried fix still don't work

    what about the handlers?

The various MS fixes should have taken care of any handler problems, cleaned the reg filters, etc. You could try a System File Check in case some spurious Windows file is corrupt. A quick SFC walk through is here.

Will the machine boot to a system disk using that drive? And does autoplay function correctly in Safe Mode?

    Hi

See if the info I posted HERE helps as this functionality was up for being disabled as part of an update to curb the ease of malware getting onto a system due to autoplay/run.

Try this application HERE see if it will allow you to enable autoplay.

You'll need to enter the BIOS and make sure that the first boot device is set to CD/DVD ROM and then pop a CD/DVD in your drive thats a bootable one, Windows XP retail CD will do, or if you dont have one of those then download a Linux Live CD version like Ubuntu to burn to CD using imgburn.

well i see the autoplay is a sec vuln so it's not really needed i just thought trying to install the print shop again it was difficult to navigate to the right set up file and wondered what happened to it auto doing it like on the last puter... nothing seems to work tho but the other devices like players auto work nice now;)
    thanks
    for trying

Might be one of those ghosts that inhabit every machine.

A band-aid would be to create a desktop shortcut pointing to the .exe of the program(s) that won't auto-start. I've had to do that with a couple of games that don't mesh well with Win7.
