CDR prevents XP from booting?

I am having some problems with my CDRW drive. The drive is "good", meaning that it reads and writes CDs without apparent problem, but about 1 in every 4 boots, the drive fails to initialize or something, and just sits there with the indicator light blinking.

When this happens, XP will not finish booting at all, and I have to force poweroff. I hate doing this -- isn't it bad for the hard disk and other components?

I am running the latest BIOS for my machine and the firmware on the CD drive is current. Is there anything I can do short of disconnecting the drive and having to open my machine up and reconnect it any time I want to burn a CD?
