About three hours ago I had gotten a BSoD with no real info on it other then "If this is your first time seeing this stop error" mumble jumbo. So I had to reboot and I decided to try again to boot Windows normally it worked. It also created a dump file I downloaded, installed, and set symbol path for MS debug tools and opened up the minidump for today which I have attached. The problem seems to be stemming from a file called cdr4_xp.sys I did some research it appears to be a driver for dvd/cd rom drives it also appears to have a relation to direct CD and Roxio burners which I have neither of. It also seems to be linked to I Tunes which I don't believe I have. In anycase from my minidump folder I see this caused a BSoD two times in the last half a month. The only thing I can figure is that I should upgrade my CD/DVD rom driver. From what I can figure Samsung manufactured my drive but when I went to their driver page I had the latest version.

    Hi

Windows inbuilt burning app is licensed from Roxio and uses same files, what buring app do you have installed?

    Is your Windows at SP2?

What tasks where you doing at the time of the BSOD?

Steps as its random I would take are update windows, then run this uninstall whatever burning app you have and clear the upper/lower filters and then (if Windows is at lastest ServicePack) run from an elevated CMD prompt, sfc /scannow *need DVD* and to get to an elevated CMD prompte in Vista, click Start > and type CMD into the Start Search box and then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator

Then re-install the latest version of your favoured burning app.

As far as I know I have no burning programs installed I have Daemon tools and Power ISO. But those aren't burning apps.

I have Vista SP0. I can't install SP2 till I install 1 which actually caused a whole series of problems itself so I am down right afraid of 2.All I was doing at the time was playing Combat Arms and surfing the web. The computer rebooted itself because of a BIOS glitch I need to get fixed which I will as soon as I can buy a UPS and a spare chip (just in case and its a separate problem) and when it went to load windows the bluescreen appeared I rebooted and attempted to run Windows again it went right through to desktop.

    Hi

As those two are virtual CD mounting apps, they could conflict with a CD burning driver, as Windows will see the mounting apps as real CDs and install drivers.

Do need to double check if you have any CD/DVD buring apps installed, Sonic is same as Roxio (parent company) so will use the same driver files. Although I dont have either of them as I use CDBurnerXP in Windows 7 but I do have that file in this location C:\Windows\System32\drivers

Which would lead me to if your two CD Mounting apps are not fully upto date then do update to latest versions, but uninstall the previous ones first, do you need both? as they are in essence the same thing, I would dump PowerISO and make sure you have updates Daemon Tools.

I only downloaded Power ISO because I have a torrent that came in .daa format so I needed a way to mount it. I guess I can make do without it. From what I can tell I have the latest version of both. The only burning program I could find once I did another look was Cyberlink Power2Go which I went ahead and deleted via Programs and Features because I never use it as I don't need to I don't burn CD or DVDs and if I did I would use Windows Explorer to do it since it's the only thing that will burn them successfully. LOL

Oddly enough I only started getting this BSoD about half a month ago on the 19th and only when my BIOS reboots due to the fact that I need to download the fix for it which I am waiting till I can buy a UPS and a backup chip or motherboard to minimize downtime in the event of a screw up.

Problem appears to be solved the file in question actually is the driver to my DVD drive and it is a XP driver and though there is no Vista driver available I seem to have fixed the problem by removing the upper and lower filters from the registry.
