CDROM Drives Won't Work After XP Upgrade

I have upgraded my system from Windows 98SE to XP Home Edition. Both my CD Rom drives stopped working afterwards. I uninstalled XP (back to 98SE now) and the drives still do not work. I have tried reinstalling the drivers from Gateways website (since I cannot do it from the Driver CD). System responds by telling me the best drivers are already installed yet the CD Rom Drives still do not work. The CD Rom Drive lights come on - but nothing happens.

HELP!!!

 

Did/do you by chance have Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 installed?

 

No I did not. The CD Rom drives are Hitachi LG Data Storage - HLDTSTCDRW-GCE8400B & Mitsumi CD Rom FX4821T!A (if that helps any).

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

 

The reason I asked about ECDC5 was that, when WinXP came out, its built-in CD recording app conflicted with it, and rendered all CD drives inaccessible-- invisible, in fact. Uninstalling it sometimes did not get them back, and a patch was quickly released to address the situation. Perhaps there is something similar afoot in your situation.

Please explain exactly what you mean by not working. Can you see the drives in Windows Explorer?

 

Yes - I can see them- and the device manager states that they are working properly but when I put in a CD it tells me that "the drive is not accessible - the device is not ready." Very frustrating.
