Could it be due to a low disc space issue?

I found a thread from 2004 (it has 33 pages and the last entry is 2011!) where countless people were getting the error but the device was ide drive not CD drive.

I'll see if I can find a solution without reading 33 pages!

I think that explains it perfectly. I have a SanDisk 4gb USB flash drive that shows up as both a storage device and a virtual CD drive (there's some pre-installed software on the virtual CD I think), so I think that is what's going on here.... probably nothing to worry about, but when I saw 40 or 50 of the same error all right in a row in the Event Viewer, I freaked out a little bit!

    Ignorance is bliss?

Be like me, if the computer is working, I don't look at logs. :-D

LOL I can't. Even on my home PC, I simply CANNOT keep my head in the sand. Occasional errors in the Event Viewer can be a warning of worse things to come, or at the very least they show that everything is definitely not "working" as it should be. But at my job, if someone brings me a PC and says they have problems, and these problems aren't immediately apparent by booting and farting around Windows for a bit, then I go straight to the event logs and look for evidence there. In this particular scenario, the HUGE accumulation of errors was innocuous and not a big deal, but normally when I see 40-50 of the exact same error all listed within 10sec of each other, I start to worry.... not much, just a bit, but I do start to worry!

I didn't follow my own advice! :heli
I opened the event viewer this morning. Some of my computers are slow to shut down and today's WindowsSecrets newsletter mentioned a Hive Cleanup Tool. I had to see if I had certain numbered errors in the Application Events to see if this is what I need to install. So sometimes you just have to take a peek. ;)
