replaced a cd-rom with a cd burner from one computer to another. cd burner will play cds and read the discs just fine, but will not let me burn any data or music. in the device manager it lists the name but titles it as a standard cd-rom. when i try to burn, it reads an error telling me no access. not sure what i did wrong. its installed in an older emachine 400Mhz running windows 2000. the burner came from a newer compaq, its a cyberdrive cw088d. I even downloaded a set of drivers for it, but it didn't change anything

Are you sure it will work with windows 2000? Driver update says WXP only, are you sure you meet minimum requirements?

unfortunately i didnt check on system requirements. i guess that might be the problem. Its my kids computer, the cd-rom took a dump, so i removed my burner to put in theirs. replace mine with a dvd-burner. actually had done this a few weeks ago, but today was the first time i tried to burn anything. i did not think it was a problem. also i just realized that i have no cd-burner software installed, do you think it would help, or its just not possible with windows 2000. when i downloaded the driver for it , it did not mention xp. am i out of luck on this? i don't think the system could handle xp

ok sorry, looked more into it, found the main website (the driver i saw for XP was pulled from a diff website). http://www.cyberdrive.com/products.asp?Product=CW088D ; did you try the driver update from there? Im not sure how strong/flimsy the W2000 burning wizard is; you can always download a free trial of a burning software and see how it goes.

yepper, thats the driver i installed. it just didn't seem to change anything. i'll have to try another type of software, or any for that matter. i was just trying to download and save some other drivers, for my sons other computer that he wiped out the graphics drivers in. was attempting to download the file and save it to the cdrom drive when all the ruckus started. thanks for the advice, i'll install some burning software and see what happens, still cant figure out why it recognizes it as a cd-rom instead of cdrw

You dont need to download any drivers, Windows 2000 OS has the drivers ya need they will install on there own.
Any CD Burner will work on that system.
Windows 2000 OS Does Not Have Any Burning Software built in. (No Burning Wizard "LOL")
You will need to install CD burning software, then it will work
    Here's A Great free one:

i was wondering if that was the problem, i have a copy of nero for my other computer..do you think this would work or should i use one you recommend?

Either is fine but if you only have one licence for Nero then its a bit borderline on the legality, so I would go with the free one ASUS posted.

Some of the CD disk makers, like Sony, and TDK have changed the way the table of contents is set up on some of their disks. If you have one of those, it allows you to burn, but because the table of content on the disc is set up the way it is, you can't read the disc, it comes up blank. It's a anti bootlegging thing invented by sony. Have you tried a reusable disk? If the reusable disk works it means you have a batch of those. If you download CDspeed from Nero, it gives you in depth disk information including what the driver is telling the system it's capabilities are, if that is wrong then it's driver trouble.

It's only an idea, and i could be way off the mark.

The Cd works, so it's wired and the power is ok, the fact that it reads says the driver is compatible with the new system, so no conflicts. Did you bang it about, that can put the lazer out of alignment. Like i said, i'm only guessing.

no didnt bang it around or anything. can read just don't write. for example if you wanted to save something , it gives you options of where. if you chose the cdrw drive it accepts until it is time to actually burn. then it says denied. thinking about removing it(unplugging it) start the pc, shut it down plug it back in and start over. just not sure as to why it picks it up as a cd-rom instead of a cdrw. but i figure maybe i missed something on the last install.

well got it to burn using nero. i cant download to the cdrw , says inaccessible or don't have authorization to open file...something like that. but if i download to a folder on my desktop, i can then burn it to cd. guess i'll take what i can get , unless anyone has any other suggestions.

    Again, clutching at straws here.

The CD drive is in working order, the fact you can burn something says that. If "inaccessible or don't have authorization " on any other instance, it means windows is using the file. Did you download CDSpeed, check that it has the R/RW box ticked. To me it sounds like a software based issue. If you check with CDspeed, you can see if the driver is reporting correctly to the operating system and software about it's capabilities, and that must be your next step, rule out the driver as the problem. Have you tried more than one R/W disk to rule out a defect?

have tried multiple discs from cd-r to cd-rw's different manufacturers. i have not done the cdspeed yet but will and will let you know the result. thanks

went to get the cd speed, there are 4 versions. am i to assume just to opt for the cd speed version?

    Program Version OS Filename Filesize
    Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.00 Windows NeroCDSpeed_400.zip 588 KB
    Nero CD-DVD Speed 3.80 Windows NeroCDSpeed_380.zip 531 KB
Nero CD Speed Manual 1.00 Windows CDSpeed_eng.chm 280 KB
    CD Speed 0.76B DOS cdspeed_076.zip 24 KB

    or does it matter?

Sorry, i goofed. It's infotool you want, it gives out an in depth readout of what your drive is telling the computer it can do

ok, installed the infotool. now what exactly am i supposed to do with this?

Fire it up. In the "drive" tab, at the bottom of the page is the heading " Supported write features". Under that, the box marked CD-RW should be ticked, Is it?

ok, i tried to download the calculator out of the "toys" menu

info window came up and asked to open or save to disc.

    i chose save to disc.
it said "E:\" in not accessible. i hit cancel and a window came up to chose where to save (i don't know what the "E" is about never had an "E" drive on this computer. D is the cd drive.

i chose to save it to the "D" drive...it started and then posted the following

    D:\c9853.exe
You do not have permission to open this file
See the owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission.

i am starting to wonder if i don't have a security setting somewhere that i am missing that is denying downloads to be saved? This wouldn't make sense though because i can save them to the desktop in a folder. I don't know, not sure . what do you think?

If it was win xp i would say you have the user set up with limited user privileges, but not sure if you can have that on win200, i skipped that version out. If you can, then that would do it.

Some software jumps the drive leter up one, like from D to E. It happens a lot in dos. Out of curiosity check the drive letter in system, in the control panel. having no letter allocated would give you the same messege.

Do you have another CD related program running? you'll have an icon down by the clock if you do. CD makers do like to dump a program in with the drivers. Always a pile of junk, but most do it. Having a program using the drive, will give you the same message the moment you try to use another program on it. Some anti virus programs can cause it as well

When you pop the RW disk in you should see the drive light flashing away, thats windows reading the disk. Then you get a noticable but small gap, then a single flash, that's the system saying everythings ok. Do you get that last flash?

ok, i checked the control panel. lists D drive as compact disc. which i guess is ok. I just talked with my son. E drive is his ipod. there is itunes installed for his ipod along with quicktime and of course windows media player which i guess could all be used for cd music burning. I have loaded Nero on there for data burning. i think there are 6 programs associated with nero. INcd is in the lower right of the taskbar by the clock. I disabled it through the task manager in system properties, but am sure it will fire back up again on reboot. the antivirus is AVG. And I put a blank RW into the drive and the light flashed for about 5 seconds, paused for a few then flashed a couple more times. Info tool read the disc as RW and clean.

Only thing i can say, mate, is it's software related, not mechanical. Either another program is using it, or the user has not got a high enough settings. As i have never used 2000, i can't be sure that's it.

Only thing i can suggest is closing down one program at a time, and try it.

okee dokee, thanks for all the help. Like i stated, it does work to burn now, but just have to save what you want to burn to the desktop and use nero. as far as user settings, it hasn't been set up to limit any user identities. just have a glitch somwhere, think i'll just start deleting some of the garbage and start there. Again I can't that you enough for all the time you have taken to help me on this. You have a great day. PS...if i figure it out i'll post it to this thread incase some other clueless sap like me has the same problem....HAVE A GREAT DAY
