Moving from landline to cellular for my home phone. The cellular service I want (ConsumerCellular) has both GSM and CDMA phones. Is GSM 2G technology? Is GSM technology going away soon (say in 2017)? If so, then I should not buy a phone that only uses GSM? Am I even asking the right questions?
    Thank you.

GSM (2G) is not going to disappear overnight.
Have a look at the table in this article.

    You'll notice there's W-CDMA (3G), CDMA one (2G) & CDMA 2000 (3G).
Check with your service provider which CDMA does it provide.

Definitely not. Choose a phone that supports both GSM and W-CDMA 0r CDMA 2000.

Have a look at what the LG Leon (LGE LG-H340) supports. It was released more than a year ago and is not exactly a high end smartphone.
