We did that already last night. A restraining order was taken out on a girl from her school back in June. To make a long story short, this girl had been in drug treatment and has recently gotten out.
When the cop talked to me this morning, he was doing the paperwork for a warrant to get the number. I am impatient. I want to know if it is her. The cop did tell us whoever the phone belongs to will be brought in and talked to, and if it is her that is doing this, she will be arrested.

Adding a few more grey hairs to my head today:eek:

Dang ...you are getting speedy service!! We waited for over a week and then they were a little reluctant to tell us ...we just wanted to know since she (the caller) made some nasty threats ....we didn't pursue it ...but we still got the info, just incase ...so have a little patience ...:)
People use cell phones just because there is no national directory.

I think we're getting speedy service as you put it because she is friends with the cop in the town she works in. He is who we called last night, and thankfully he was on duty.
The restraining originally was because this girl and someone else pointed a gun at 2 of my daughters and threatened her. So, yes, this is serious to me.
The one problem we are having is it two different counties, and they seem to be having some trouble communicating with each other.

Do you have the number and are trying to trace who it belongs to, or have the name and are trhying to trace their number? If the first...I have an idea... ;)

We have the number. In fact, the cop called it last night, left a message for them to contact him, or he would be pursuing it. No call back to him, but this morning she had more texts.

I really would advise not to screw with this ...let the cops handle it ...pointing a gun at someone is definitly grounds for arrest and you don't want to either provoke additional abuse/threats or actions or compremise the issue from a legal standpoint.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Call the number and ask to speak to "whoever his/her name is". If they ask who is calling, you know you have the person you think, otherwise they will tell you immediately you have the wrong number and there is no-one by that name at that number. :)

Do it from a number they will not recognize, so not your daughter's cell or home number.

TimW--...I just want to know if it is her. I would not do anything myself. Last night, my husband went to her work, and followed her home, and as my husband and cop was there, she received texts telling her they knew the cops were there, and her daddy, etc., so they or her, were watching her at work.
It's a long story about the gun. when she called 911, the county would not help her, told her she had to call the city police, and by that time, they were gone, and no gun found. I do know there was one.
The cops were we live are jerks. They told us last night, being she was at work in another county, it was out of their jurisdiction, even though the restraining order specifically names her work as one of the places this girl cannot come to when my daughter is working.
I am just impatient I guess.
*lev.........thanks. My husband also called from his cell last night. Used *67 or something like that, so it showed up as private number. They answered and hung up.

Did he ask for them by name and then they hung up?

They hung up without saying a word. My daughter thought they might have "declined" the call?

Possible if you didnt even get a voice.

I think I would have another talk with your friend the cop and suggest a warrent for stalking and terroristic threatening.

With the restraining order, if it is her, she will go to jail
The warrant will give him the name of who the phone belongs to that is texting her. From what he told us this morning, he will then be bringing this person is, finding out who was doing the texting and why. If it is the girl, she will go to jail. No warrant needed, it is in the restraining order.

If you call someone on a mobile (cell) phone and here it hang up, then they answer then hang up, not just reject it - this goes for anywhere in the world - because you've made a connection with the network and can physically hear it connecting. If it was rejected, it would go straight to voicemail (answering machine).

Gal, I'm sorry to hear you're going under this. Abusive text messaging, as it is - or text bullying, is a criminal offense over here in the UK now and whoever does it can be charged. Have you tried calling your daughter's network provider and seeing if there's anything they can do? The first thing they can do, is block the number from sending anything to a number.

Need any further info, don't hesitate to PM me, mobile networks and stuff is one area I have knowledge in!!!

Thanks mcadam. We tried calling the provider last night, but they wouldn't tell us anything without a warrant from the cops.
yes, the texts were threatening, telling her she was going to he*l tonight, that she'd be going in the ditch, calling her names, etc.
I don't think there is anything we can do ourselves, but wait for the cops to contact us.
My daughter is at work again tonight, so I am planning for a long night again, and my husband having to drive there. Hope not, but we'll see how it goes.

This is unfortunate, but it's your "right" to have the number blocked if you require so.

NB - I say "right", it varies for each mobile (cell) contract, I'd definitely consider it though.

Surely US cops can operate anywhere in their State, and not be stopped by county's (out of their jurisdiction) ?? Bazza

    PS:
In OZ, any cop can operate anywhere within their state, and some states are as big as California, or Texas at least. Baz

We have different ranks, I guess you'd say.
There is city cops, who can only go in their city
    Sherriffs.......which is throughout the county
State Patrol, which can go anywhere in the state.
From what I understand, they can all go wherever IF it originates within their jurisdiction.

Thanks gal1998 for the reply. Seems like it would result in a lot of bureaucracy to me? Bazza

Unfortunately, bazza, it has. We still aren't getting any help from the county we live in, which is where the restraining order is from. The other officer is helping us, though. He did get a warrant for the Cell company to tell him who has that number. Now it is a waiting game. Told us it might take a day or two, as he had to mail it to the main company.
My husband has called the Chief of Police from origination of restraining order and he keeps telling him he'll get back to us. No phone call at all since yesterday morning and my husband has called him twice.

This may be a long shot, but try entering the cell number into a web search. If the phone owner has a web page or uses some web services, maybe they were ignorant enough to post their cell phone number.

Gal...just post the cell phone number here and let the direct sales spammers get them :p

I have tried that toehead. Nothing comes up.
Lev...I wish I dare. Once we know for sure who it is, I just might.
We are still waiting. She has not gotten any more texts since Wednesday morning. She is mad at us, as we have told her she can't go to football game tonight, and it is Homecoming with a dance afterwards. I want her safe. We told her she could go if we went with her, and took her and picked her up from dance, but she won't go for that..lol

A royal PITA for her, I guess, but the only safe solution until you get this sorted. Bazza
