Cell Phone Reception Question

I am on Virgin Wireless. I live in an area, that according to their website is in optimal coverage. I have an el cheapo flip phone I bought for $29 or so. Works OK, but, it drops calls inside my house. I am using this in place of a landline. The guy I bought the phone from says one of the $79 and up phones will have much better reception.

Anyone have experience with this? I will buy if better reception. I want good reception, a camera, text, and that is all. I don't live on the phone. Ideas greatly appreciated.

Have you seen any reviews online for the different phones, Fred? Honestly, I can't imagine spending $50 more on a phone is going to make a huge difference, although I'm sure different phones get different reception. I think it mostly depends on your signal to the cell tower and why it's being blocked inside your house. It's just like a router in that way from what I understand as far as interference.

Does your provider allow you to purchase it and then return it if it doesn't work out for you? I know ours has a money back guarantee for at least 30 days.

Another possible solution is a cellular repeater/booster, but I think you need to figure out if you get a good signal from where every you would put it (ie. roof).

I get a good signal outside, so that might be a better option. Thanks.

I have the same problem with both our phones Fred.
One cost $180 and the other cost $320 but both have the same problem indoors and yet if i open the the sliding glass wall they both get %100 signal, so the cost of the phone does not seem relevant.

I just noticed your '$79 on up". So that may be the case, but as Bill mentioned, sometimes it just doesn't because your house is the issue. I'd just be careful if you don't get your money back if it doesn't work. Do you have friends who come over who use their phones? If so, do they have issues?

Interesting Bill. My current cell phone costs like $39, so it is about as cheap as you can get. A friend's Iphone worked great inside my place. Don't recall what version of the Iphone he had.

Can't find out much about it on the Google. Plus I am pretty much cell phone illiterate. :-D

Of course I have friends. I keep them in the little box next to my desk. :-D I rarely have visitors, seems like someone came over a few months ago... I might can borrow someone's phone and test it. That would be a good idea, might save me some $.

When you bring your little green army guys out to play, you'll have to ask them about their reception, Fred. LOL

Yep...I'd be sure before buying a new one. You mentioned an iPhone. Since the iPhone 5 is out, they are offering the old versions for a lot less now.

What green army guys? Tactical clothing comes in many colors besides green. :major The IPhone won't work on my plan. I pay $30 per month, get 1500 mins of talk & text. I used almost 400 mins last month, so I am OK with that.

I went to my friend's house today, and his Iphone had 4 bars in his front yard. Standing next to him, mine had one bar, then 2 bars. I could get no bars in his house. I think the phone sucks. Did not make it to the cell phone place, will go by Monday.

That definitely indicates a problem with your current phone. LOL

Good luck with your quest. It seems you don't want data. I'd go with the most high end non-data phone you can get...particularly since it's your only phone.

Fred....did you ever get a new phone?

I was wondering if you ever solved this issue.

Yes, I got a Samsung. It is the best phone offered on the plan I am on. I was told an Android phone would have better reception, but the price goes up on monthly payments.

Gonna look into the cell booster thingy.

New phone does send texts faster... :-D

So it didn't help reception? That stinks.

Let me know if you get the booster. I'm curious how well they work.

(btw...I thought you didn't text or do any of that new fangled cell phone stuff.LOL)
