Certain sounds do not play

Hello all. I am new to this forum stuff, but my computer is terribly frustrating and beyond my pc capabilities. My comp plays music from Rhapsody, videos from bittorrent and cd's, but will not play any sounds from the internet including streaming television, web page music (myspace) or typical windows sounds such as the start up chime. The device manager lists these items under Sounds, Video and game controllers: Audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, soundmax integrated digital audio, unimodem half-duplex audio device and video codecs. All of which state they are properly functioning. However, If i go control panel->speech, sounds and audio devices-> sound and audio devices, the volume tab has all of the fields grayed out and states "no audio device". I just noticed this problem, but used the streaming television about five days ago. Additionally, I am running windows xp with all service packs. I have rebooted multiple times with no avail. Please help!

 

Just for giggles go to start>programs>accesories>entertainment and open the volume control panel
make sure wave, cd player and sw synth are not muted and you can adjust volume here also
i have also seen people suggest that you download a codecs package but I am unable to direct you to it maybe someone else can or search the forum for codecs

 

That's it tomorrow I am dying my hair blonde again! lol It worked and everything is great. I am not certain how everything was muted, but your giggles humored me. Thank you very much.
