i was running hot with a sempron 2400 on a k7vem soyo mb w/thermaltake fan plus heat sink. it kept shutting my ps off till i rigged another fan aimed in front of the other. sounded like a leaf blower, but brought the temp down to 125 f. (cha temp was much lower.) so to solve the cooling problem, i purchased an anthlon tbird 1.33 gig and installed it. at idle cpu temp is stable at 118 f. but the cha temp is 129 f. what is cha and why is it so hot w/ smaller processor? is that temp safe?

'cha' is chassis temp - the temperature of the motherboard - also known as case temp. Yes it's far too hot!
Have you got any fans sucking air out of the case?

thanks nitro. my first thought was case temp also. somehow it was related to the hd. i noticed the hd felt really hot. it was outside the case on a plywood bench. so, i put the hd in the case and the cha temp dropped nearly 30 degrees f. always grateful to you and the majorgeek team players
