Conversion of what? Outlook to Windows Live Mail?

All I have heard is good things about Windows Live Mail. From what I understand it's one of the easier mail clients to configure. Looks like your system will handle it well enough. I guess I would upgrade to SP3. There is still support for SP3 through the beginning of next year...:)

Hi Don't see where you have a continued thread or question on this, so will advise similar to others who have posted that if you use Outlook for your email continue to use it as its good, but if you need or want to use Live Mail for email then follow this HERE to export your contacts from Outlook to Live Mail.

Exporting saved email is tricker, which is why I would say keep using Outlook.

What Version of Outlook are you using?

I tend personally to use Outlook (2013 in my case) over Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Mail is good if you do not have Outlook, but if you do, not worth changing IMHO.

If you can download Window Live Mail and install it, you can post your questions about the change here in this thread. Notifications are sent when you add to the thread, so everyone who has posted will know and be able to respond.

Hopefully, the links will help some with that.

Katloverlynn...is this Outlook Express? There are different types. All the Microsoft Office programs come with a version of Outlook, but it's different...

Do you get an error message when you try to open it, or is the problem that it won't send or receive mail?

    :)

I am infirm and have my groceries delivered by mail, since MS Outlook 2007 crashed, I am hoping that I can post your suggestion. Groceries are delivered on Sundays ~ Regards, Lynn

OK...that's the same Outlook that I use, so maybe I can help...

Can you click on the program and see everything on the screen like the mail program and all your e-mails?

If you can, that would be a good start...

I would love to take you up on your offer, however, you should be aware of a couple of things. I had a stroke so my brain jumbles things up ~ you would have to be VERY explicit with me. Do you have GO-TO-ASSIST or REMOTE SERVICE so you can take control of my computer? ~ Regards, Lynn

See, I'm confused already ~ this just seems to be a copy of what I already sent you ~ Regards, Lynn

katloverlynn...my mother had a stroke about 2-3 years ago. She is fine now, and I am sure you will be too.

So you need help to order your groceries. I have no experience using remote features of PCs. I have the service in Microsoft XP turned off for now.

Do you have an online e-mail account (on the internet?)? If you were importing your e-mail from an online account when Outlook was working, I can help you get access to it to a certain extent. You will need your e-mail address and password. If your e-mail address is not based on the internet, you could set up an account with Hotmail or another one very easily. Then all you would need is some help setting up your contacts, so you can correspond as necessary...

Are you up for this challenge?

So you are unable to start Outlook? Do you get any specific message?

Have you tried tried to run SCANPST (located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12")? This will fix any errors in the PST file (which contains all mail messages & contacts).

The error message is too long, with the stroke I lost my typing skills (hunt and peck). Say I can use RUN, then SCANPST and that will work ~ Regards, Lynn

    katloverlynn...

If you can't use these instructions, perhaps someone close to you like a relative or neighbor or friend can do this for you :)

Just a thought, but could you get someone to try to help you fix this using this thread here at MajorGeeks?

If you can highlight and copy the following text, it will run in the run box and open scanpst. You will then need the name of the .pst file, so you can scan it however.

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\scanpst.exe

For the name of the .pst, you will have to navigate to the folder containing the .pst files. For my copy of Office 2007, that is here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

I've only used this tool once to recover some mail, and it worked for me. I'm sure Pwillener can help you more than I can. I'm fairly confident the correct .pst will be the most recent one with your e-mail (account name) in the title. If you click on the file name, then you can copy it to you clipboard and add it to the end of the name of the folder (as listed above...the second one). Just then paste it into the text box in scanpst and press Start.

Again, sorry I know this is probably too much, but maybe you can get someone close to you to follow the instructions.

    Katloverlynn...hope you're having a good day today...

    Try this:
    1. Open Control Panel. Open Add/Remove programs. Scroll down to see if Microsoft Office is in the list
    2. If it is there, click on the entry. Now click the "Change" button. Select the repair option to see if a repair will work.

Might be a 15-20 minute wait while Microsoft Office attempts to repair itself

    :)

    OK...that's good...

Have you tried Outlook 2007 yet?

I have Office 2007 same as you, so maybe that will help me help you so to speak...

I have MS 2007, this is what the error msg says: The C douments and settings\xp user\Local settings\app data\Microsoft\Outlook.pst is in use and cannot be accessed. Close any app that is using this file. You may have to restart your computer (not responsible for any typos) ~ Regard Lynn

    Katloverlynn...Again...hope you are doing well...

This part will be difficult. Need to try to repair the .pst file. Is there anyone near you who could use your computer to try this? If so, you should ask for their help.

Katloverlynn, I am leaving these instructions, and I hope you can do this or find someone to. Kind of complicated...

    1. Now type the following in the Run box on your start menu:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\scanpst.exe

On the scanpst menu, select browse. Go to the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

If you can't find the folder, open the C:\ folder. Click on "Tools" then on "Folder Options". In "Folder Options" look for "Hidden Files and Folders". Just below that select "Show hidden files and folders". A little bit further below, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)". Select "Yes" on the warning menu, then select "Apply" on the menu. Now try to navigate again using the "Browse" on scanpst to the address of the .pst files
    2. In this folder are your .pst files. Look for the files with your e-mail or account name in the title. Those are the .pst files. Find the most recent one...it will be the one with the highest number after your account name. Click on the title of the file and then double left click it.
    3. Click start on the scanpst tool.
    4. Go through all of your .pst files in the same way
    5. Report back and let us know if Outlook is working...

Katloverlynn...perhaps someone else can help you, but this is all I can do. Until this is done, I can't know what to do next. Please see if you can find someone to read this post and run the program...

None of the people in my filters-n-frames-two@googlegroups.com could help, now I'm working with a group that's about 30 miles from home, but he is semi computer literate. I've got a feeler out to find a technician whose appmt is on the 6th.

Question: if I try to do this myself, will I get in trouble or will affect other graphic programs? ~ Regards, Lynn

    Kayloverlynn...good afternoon/evening...

If you can do the first one and start the scanpst program, then it's just a matter of finding the folder with the files.

It looks complicated, but maybe you can do it or at least give it a try. If you get stuck, just quit and start over later...

I don't think you will hurt anything running scanpst. It's designed to fix internet e-mail files particularly, so it won't damage anything else. It comes with your Microsoft Office 2007 program just for this purpose.

If you find this a little too stressful or if you'd rather wait for some reason, see if you can get your friend to follow the instructions in the previous post and run the repair...

Good luck. Once the repair has been run on each of the .pst files for your mail account, let me know if it is working again...
