Hello, Can anyone help me with my problem?

I have Dell XPS desk top from 4years ago.
I have 2x512mb ddr2 for my memory module and tried to upgrade
with new 2x2gb ddr module because the performance was so slow these days...
When I install them, computer does not boot but it is on. Screen is blank...
There is 2 long 2 short 2 long beeps.

Is this because the module is not matching with my XPS?

If I put back my old 2x512mb module it works fine but slow performance as before...

I really appreciate it if anyone can help me with this problem...

Some of the recent XPS will only accept 1Gb per slot, check your PC with www.crucial.com to see what it recommends.

And welcome to the forum :).

    satrow,

    Thanks for the help!
Looks like it was too much for my computer. I will try installing 2x1gb module.
But is it possible to put 4x1gb for more memory??

I you have a 32-bit Windows (or any 32-bit OS), you will only get to use from 2.75Gb to around 3.5Gb of your RAM (really depending upon your motherboard and graphics card - the more RAM your card has, the more RAM Windows has to use to use it ... - confused yet? ^_^), with an 'average card', you'll likely see Windows telling you that you have 3 - 3.25Gb installed of your 4GB.

3Gb is better than 2, and as you have 2x 512's now, adding 2x 1Gb to them will be the most cost-effective option (unless you are considering upgrading your OS to 64-bit).

I better stick with 2x512mb and adding 2x1gb for now...:)

    Thank you!!:-D

No worries, it'll be much better than 2x 512 ...

For a basic view of the 4Gb limit/problem, see this Crucial page. If you really want a techical lowdown on it, Googling Mark Russinovitch's blog will keep you busy until your new RAM arrives ;).
