Changing A Registry Value

I hope you folks can help with this one. A little background: Toshiba A-105 series laptop. WinXP Home. External HD: salvaged from another Toshiba, OS intact. I accidentally booted up my computer while the external HD was attached (should have plugged it in later). What happened was that I lost 'My pictures' from the start menu and now 'My pictures' shows up on the computer as Drive E:\, even though the external HD is disconnected. When I tried installing an hp inkjet printer recently I was getting error messages reading 'Invalid Drive E:\'.

I performed a registry search and came up with two instances where 'E:\' is mentioned. They read like this:

NAME TYPE DATA


000 RG_SZ E:\

My Pictures REG_SZ E:\My pictures

I imagine I have to change these to read 'C:\' but find that I can't erase and retype the correct value in the registry. If I right click on 'E:\' I get a dialog box that gives me the following choices: New: Key/string value/binary value/DWord/multi-string value/expandable string value. If in fact I'm supposed to change 'E:\' to 'C:\' how do I go about doing this without messing up the registry? Thanks...Mr. Ed

 

Right click on 000 and choose Modify. The E:\ will be there. Do a System Restore Point first.

 

would doing an "export" of the registry be a little safer than setting a restore point - easier to handle too

 

No offense to the OP, but if someone is unfamiliar with modifying a registry key, I don't usually like to complicate things by going further into uncharted territory. Call it "CYA". Simple for you and me today wasn't always that simple.
