One of my machines is an old XP Home SP3 machine.

I need to reassign the drive letter of my 'D' HD down to 'F' for reasons too long to go into here.

The trouble is, 'E' & 'F' are currently a DVD & CD-R/W, and Disk Management doesn't seem to offer a simple route to change the letter assignments of these types of drives .

    Any simple solution ?

    try right clicking my computer

    select 'manage'

    select 'disk manegament'

select the CDRW (or whichever is F) and right click and select 'change drive letter'

    change 'F = CDRW to G'

    change 'D = HD to F'

    that should do it

You know, that was what I kept trying last night from 23:30 to 02:00.

It just now occurred to me to try putting a data CD in both drives so
XP could try to see the drive then. :-o

    That did it !

    Thanks!

You still should have been able to use seeing's method to permanent change the drive letters without having to insert a disk. FTR, I have my CD drive set to "Q" and my DVD drive set to "V". I do this immediately after installing Windows. In this way, if I add or remove a card reader, another hard or external drive, the drive letters for my opticals don't shift, staying forever at Q and V.
