changing icons in win98

How do i do it? i found how to change the icons on the desktop, but i want to change others. More specifically, my computer has associated .bmp files with notepad icons. i want to change it back. Sometimes new software installations or reboots randomly change my files' icons. How can i manually change them back? i can't seem to find where this is controlled.


while we are at it, "My Pictures" is the only folder that will display thumbnails... even when i click "enable thumbnail view" in properties of a folder. is this the intended way for it to work?

As for the folder, it is actually set to view as web-page. i am not sure if i explained it right, but it does display the preview at the side when i hover my mouse over the file, but i was wanting my sub-folders of "My Pictures" to display any picture files as little thumbnails, instead of the icon, as soon as i open the folder.

 

Well, i got it to work, from your original suggestion. There is a button in there to set all folders like current, i clicked that while in the "My Pictures" folder and after that all the other folders had the option of "thumbnail" along with "large icon", "small icon" and such. The thumbnail option hadn't appeared in that list before, and in fact, the pictures folder just didn't have it either, it just had none of the other options checked. Kinda weird.
