System info: Dell Dimension 2350, Windows XP Pro

My problem involves scrolling using the scroll wheel. This function works in most programs, but not in one I use intensively (SKYIndexing, a program for book indexing). The developer says that the scroll wheel will work with Microsoft mouse driver ver. 4.12 so I have attempted to install that driver without success.

I have downloaded and installed the Intellipoint 4.12 software, but my mouse driver does not change. It is still ver. 5.1.2600. I have tried uninstalling everything in Device Manager, updating there, etc. to no avail. I found a bug report here
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816659
that I thought might apply, but I cannot find any ver 4.12 drivers in my system – though admittedly am not sure what I’m looking for. Did find files for the ver 5.1 driver, though. It seems to me that the download installed the *program* for ver. 4.12, but the ver 4.12 *drivers* have not been installed.

How do I install and use the 4.12 drivers???

Possibly related: Another user of SKYIndexing recently told me she was using a Kensington Expert Trackball, which has a scroll ring, and that this worked in SKYIndexing. I bought this, but the scroll ring does not work for me. I’ve checked that I used the same driver version of the Kensington software and settings that she used. She’s also using Win XP. Any ideas why this driver works for her and not me?

I have also used the Evoluent ergonomic mouse. That will work in an old version of SKYIndexing but not the current version. If I connect any other pointing device while that driver is loaded, the scroll wheel no longer works in SKY.

I think I have properly uninstalled each mouse program before installing a new one. And I have no problem with the scroll wheel in other programs such as Word or Internet Explorer.

I have spent two days trying to sort this out. If someone can help I’d be very grateful. Otherwise, I’ll just have to use the old version of SKY with the Evoluent mouse.

Thanks, Rod. I tried this but it did not resolve my problem. There's good news, though. The developer of the program I'm having trouble with just notified us that he thinks the problem may be resolved with the next service pack.
