I'm going to change from win 98 to win xp. I don't know the best way to go about it, knowing that I would like to take some programs & files that I have backed up to external hard drives with me. Do I buy an upgrade version & does it JUST overwrite my system files or do I by the full version & does it overwite everything and then do a restore. If I install the full version, how do I do a "clean" install? Any comments would be appreaciated.

Don't have the disk--where can I find other info? I did a search for win xp and didn't have much luck.

If you have all your important files ( remember to copy your favorites folder and email address book ) backed up on external drive then thats a good move.

as for the programs you want to use... do you have CDs or the programs saved so you can fully re-install them again from scratch?

Personally I would always recomend a full install from scratch rather than an upgrade as some old reminents of the 9x version will be left thus taking up space and potentially causing problems.

Guides to installing XP ( Home and Pro ) Black Vipers site as well as having superb guide to services also has a clear and easy to follow install guide to XP

    Pro

its got pictures to help... have a good read of them.

some other things to think about is how well your hardware or software will be compatable with XP use the Upgrade Advisor to highlight any potential problem areas.

    plus read this info http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/compatibility/default.asp

a final helpfull hint..... it maybe worth also downloading prior to installing XP and hardware driver updates eg. graphic card etc etc as they are now different ones to the ones you may have backed up for Win98 you need the XP versions............. and remember to write or backup your ISP connection info aswell as the you email accounts server info.

edit: OMG it took me near 20mins to type this :( didnt see you sneek in Robo ;)
