    Good Morning

I have about 500 computers on a network spread out at different locations. Is there a way to change the PC name of a few computers through active directory. One of our locations is 45 minutes away and be much easier if i can change the name remotely then have to go there.

Question, can you actually communicate with the computers at the other site from the DC command prompt? you can run a command from command prompt that will change the name of a remote computer and force a reboot.

there is no way to do it directly from active directory as a computer name change will require a reboot.

How would you do it from a command prompt? You think there be a way with AD.

heres the command by the way

    netdom renamecomputer currentcompname /newname:newcompname /userd:domain\admin /passwordd:* /usero:domain\admin /passwordo:* /reboot:10 /force

currentcompname is replaced, obviously, with the current name of the computer youre changing.

    newcompname, same obvious change.

/userd:domain\admin domain\admin is replaced with your domain\account with admin rights
/passwordd:* the * is placed in there so the command will prompt you for the password of the admin account after you actually run the command.
/reboot:10 reboots the computer after 10 seconds
    /force force reboot

changing a computer name requires a reboot which cant be done from AD apparently. so the ability isnt even included.

you'll need netdom push out to the computers your name changing, so it runs locally.
