okay a week ago i ran a defragment ( for the 1st time ) a friend told me that could help since my computer was freezing alot ) so i ran it .. and took like a whole day for only 50 percent.. so i was like f this and i stopped it..

ever since than i got this problem...

i can delete or move like most of the icons on my destop ( meaning songs etc ) or on my documents or any other stuff )

when i restart my computer it a screen appears saying my primary drive is f up. so it lets me press f2 to continue .. and than it does the chdsk thing.. reads all this files that arent readable ( it says file 34858 unreadable etc .. )

now my concern is is there a way i can delete , move files ?

i try to do the defragment thing.. says that a chdsk is schedule to run. on my drive c .. so i do it.. but nothing happens.......

could i fix this my self ? doing some of the stuff ya help me out ? by following steps ?

or do i need a new pc ?..

some ppl at this other forum ( who sent me here ) told me my drive was dying on me.. what does that mean ? ...

also if right click on my drive c on my computer .. says i got alot of space freee.. it didnt said that before..

You could try doing a repair of the Operating System from your windows disk. Insert your windows disk and reboot. Unless you've messed with bios it should be set to boot from CD. If it doesn't ask if you want to boot from CD you need to press a key during the boot sequence to get the boot menu (this varies with different bios's but it's usually a Function key, eg mine is F11).
Windows installer will detect your operating system and ask if you want to repair the installation or start a new install. Select repair.

But the first thing you should do is BACKUP all of your personal data.

But if it where me, I'd do a backup of everything I can get and then try a full format and reinstall. Probably give you less headaches in the long run.

What sort of computer is this?
You should have recieved either a windows disk, a recovery disk from the manufacturer or there will be a recovery partition on the hard drive.
Do you have any of these?

And as I said do a backup asap if you want to save your data, the HD could well be on the way out.

Yeah - I would backup ASAP. If you happen to have a old school floppy disk in your computer you could go to bootdisk.com and create a floppy bootdisk to run chkdsk from.

But you are really going to need your original system CD.

i gotta look for the box when i bought the pc.. is a windows xp . hp..

    is old. like 5yrs old...

    one question...

if i take this to a place to get fixed would it be more than 300.00 ?

also.. if i buy a external drive ( to save my files ) what would be a good one ?. want to spend like 150.00

** would i be able to move the files to the drive ? since it wont let me move them to a damn foldder ? also .. how about i upload files to like a sendspace link ? would that be good ?

like i need alot of pictures and music ... ...
