Every time we start our computer it runs a check disc. This just started a few days ago.

Also noticed that my CD drive and DVD drive are not listed when I open "My Computer".
When I put a CD in the either drive nothing happens
Any help will be much appreciated.
    (Running XP Pro SP2)
    Thanks

To turn off check disk on boot"

Start > Run and type regedit
Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE , then go to the following subkey: \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Change the BootExecute entry to: autocheck autochk *
    Exit your registry
    Reboot

For your CD/DVD drive problem, open up the side of the computer casing and check that the cables and firmly in place both at the back of the CD/DVD drive(s) and the opposing end.

Let us know how you get on with both :)

I checked the regedit entry and it was already set to
    autocheck autochk *

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

Do you have a HP Scanjet scanner connected to this PC?

    Something else to check out....

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

    Highlight the Winlogon folder.

In the list look for "SFCScan", this should be set to (0) if it is set to (1) the scan will happen at every boot.

    I went to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

and there was no "SFCScan", in the list.

Also, I do not have a HP Scanjet scanner.

    But thanks for the thoughts.

for your cd and dvd drives being gone if they are plugged in right,
put that in a notepad and save it as cdgone.reg and run it

    Expanding on this:

Did it actually have more than 1 autochk line entries? It may have since your computer is regularly running chkdsk. If so follow the same routine below as before...

Start > Run and type regedit
Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE , then go to the following subkey: \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Look for the REG_MULTI_SZ value with the following name: BootExecute
Delete each of these lines except one, which should be the default one: autocheck autochk *
    Exit your registry
    Reboot

Sorry I have not gotten back to you. i was away for a few days.
No. There is only one autochk line entry.
    Thanks for the advice.

I ran cdgone.reg with the Regisrty Editor. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. Drives are still missing.

I just noticed in Device Manager that I have a yellow icon next to
Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator. I get the following message:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

Don't know if this is related to my missing CD and DVD drives.

hmmm. I'm not sure that that's supposed to be. Try and see if the troubleshooter does anything to it.

    Troubleshooter does nothing.

hmmm i don't know then. Maybe I just can't think of anything. Maybe somebody else in the forum might know how to deal with this.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

    Then try troubleshooter

Well, now I am really lost.
I uninstalled the driver for "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator"
When I did a "Scan for hardware changes" nothing was found, so now "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" is no longer listed.

After a couple of days I noticed that both the "E" (DVD drive) and "F" (CD drive) are listed in "MY Computer". Device Manager says everyting is OK. BUT, when I put a CD or DVD in them they both say they do not have any files on them (which they do). I've uninstalled and re-installed both drives and DevMgr says all is well.

I put an empty CD disc in the DVD drive and was able to copy a file to it, successful (at least thay's what it told me). BUT when I looked to see if the file was on the CD, it tells me there are 0 files on it.

Any thoughs would be much appreciated.

What did you use to copy a file to it? In burning software if you don't close the session, any CD/DVD you examine will appear to have 0 files on it.
If you want to add files later the correct selections are: close the session but let the CD/DVD open.

I used the CD Writing Wizard.

Also, I tried other CDs &DVDs that use to work. They all show up as having a total size of "0 bytes" in MyComputer.

Looks like the CD & DVD drive problem had something to do with Windows Media Player. I upgraded to Media Player 11 and the drives are working.
However, I have no sound and still can't fiqure out how to reinstall
"Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator"
