I'm having check-disk error on my 1TB drive, to be specific on the 200GB partition on it (currently have 2 partitions, 50gb & 200 gb). I'm attaching pics, so you can have an idea whats the problem.

Basically, the problem comes at step 2. After performing the chkdsk/r at the startup, the same error occurs. I also performed a Quick Test by using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows and it gave the following result:

    Test Option: QUICK TEST
    Model Number: WDC WD10EARS-00Z5B1
    Unit Serial Number: WD-WMAYM0011199
    Firmware Number: 80.00A80
    Capacity: 1000.20 GB
    SMART Status: PASS
    Test Result: PASS
    Test Time: 00:23:26, August 27, 2010

Can anyone please tell me what is going wrong here? I've googled a lot and the chkdsk/r which came up as a solution is not working at all. Please help. :)

    Greetings, sinnersaint...

We need to know your operating system and service pack #, and the symptoms that appeared that made you feel like you needed to run a chdsk...also, if it's a 1TB drive, and you've listed 50GB and 200GB partitions, what is the remainder of the drive used for?

well, i tried chkdsk/f and it worked! now i can run Disk Defragmenter and its not giving the error to run chkdsk/f .... :)

and my OS is Win-XP SP2, as for the remainder of the drive, i've still not formatted it :p

The "/f" parameter was removed and 'built-in' to the "/r" parameter with WinXP SP2 (maybe even in SP1 or SP0; I can't remember the last time I tried a chkdsk on a pre SP2 WinXP system), this means that using the "/r" parameter implies the "/f" also, and trying to use "/f" will result in the "parameter not specified" error every time.... So, I'm curious, how did you get the "/f" to work? Also, the other error you were getting said it cannot unmount the partition while it is in use. This means that if I'm using Windows, and try to run chkdsk from a command prompt on the same partition that has the Windows that's in use, it cannot run chkdsk unless a dismount is "forced". Or the chkdsk can be scheduled to run at the next reboot.

well, i first tried the chkdsk/r and it did nothing. I was unsure if i should use the chkdsk/f because on some websites it said that it will take a LOT of time to scan the disk and as the partition is question is 200GB i didn't want to. Also, because we have electricity problem here.

Anyways, coming to the point, i eventually tried the chkdsk/f command from the command prompt, it asked if I wanted to unmount the partition, i said NO because i wanted it to work @ the start-up when other programs and services were not running AND...... this was not the Windows partition that i was check-disking :-D, it was a secondary hdd. So, the chkdsk started at the next startup, and the problemo was solved.

How did I checked if the problem was solved? well, i tried to defragment the hdd and it didn't gave any msg to chkdsk/f the disk.

Hope it helps, if not, please do ask freely as it might also help someone in the future looking to solve the same problem :)
