Checking drive in Win XP Pro

I Right clicked on the c drive, got to the choice to auto fix file system erros or scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. I checked scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. It's been stuck half finished on phase 4 for about a half an hour now. Is that normal. Did I do something wrong?
Was I supposed to do both scans at the same time?
Should I leave it alone or shut it off? It won't let me cancel. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Depending on the size of your harddrive could take 20 minutes or hour or more ,let it finish.

 

Check out if the program is still active (the red LED on the front panel should blink from time to time)
