I am looking to have someone build me a computer. Can anyone direct me to some type of checklist for ALL of what is needed? I know this may be too general. But if I see a checklist of options, this may help.

I just want to start buying things now, and have everything needed and ready to go.

    Is this possible?

    Thanks

    Joey

well this is what you will need:
    an atx case
a mobo thats compatable with your processor
    processor
    hard drive
    cd rom drive
    floppy drive (optional)
    cables for all drives
    heatsink
video card if not onboard with mobo
    power supply
    mouse
    keyboard
    monitor

Actually, it would help if you rememembered some memory!!!! Never forget to add memory  btw, all cables should come with the motherboard, so you dont need to buy any, unless you want glow in the dark ones. AAretail bboxed processor will come with a heasink also.

Oh, and an operating system cd would be handy. Damn, my MEMORY isnt what it used to be! ( I started with 16kB in a Mattel Aquarius :) )

yeah if your willing to pay that much for the original O/S cd like windows XP home or pro ... its not that hard to get hold of a copy which still does the job ;)
yeah without memory the mobo will beep like crazy :p
if your not planning to buy everything at once, only buy the parts that wont outdate for a year at least .. eg.
    RAM
Case and PSU - you can get cases which come with power supplies...(usually the cheap ones)
    Monitor, mouse, keyboard...
    HDD and DVD-rom/ or CD-Rom
say you buy the video card and processor and mobo but it takes you a year to actually have all the parts ready to build, by that time you would have paid a bit of money for the processor and mobo and you decide you want the next 1 up then what...
Just a few things to consider

    Thanks for the checklist.

I am going to buy things within a month. I've been told that it's better to custom build a PC then a pre-packaged one. That way I can get exactly what I want - plus not have ALL the extra software on it that I don't need, and the trial versions.

My main use for the PC is to convert my video tapes to digital - also record my vinyl albums to digital also. Watch some DVD's - burn some. And there's only 1 Game that I want to play (RCT3 - Roller Coaster Tycoon). Nothing more when it comes to gaming.

So, I'll put all of your responses together for a check list, then I'll post what I'm going to buy for each one - so anyone can point out a problem/concern if they see one.

There are a LOT of great deals every week with parts (between CompUSA, BestBuy, J&R Music World, Staples). So, this way I will have the system I want. I'm just going to hire someone to put it all together. As for the OS, I'm just going to buy a used one (as long as I can get a license with it - like through amazon.com). I did notice that some systems with gaming had about 2 or 3 fans in the back to keep the system cool... I'm going to check out some cool casings - almost like Pimp My PC !!! :)

    Any thoughts?

    Joey

PS - BestBuy has a group called the GeekSquad. They have a site www.geeksquad.com - they charge FLAT RATES for all computer services - at the store or home calls. Anyone have any experience with them?

Convert video tapes to digital? And vinyl to digital? You'll want a video capture card, plus a sound card with a bit more than onboard mobo capabilities.
