I set my pc up to to a CHK DSK on start up, it got through stages 1-4 ok, but on stage 5 i get the BSOD and the following:
Now i can live without this CHK DSK i think, but i need to know where to de-activate it as it is set to run from start up and has failed twice now.

I will keep a close eye on this thread to supply any extra info you might need.
    Thanks in advance.

What's your operating system? File system? If it is FAT32 you could convert it to NTFS which runs better & is more secure.

    Warning: NTFS cannot read FAT32.

I have XP home sp2 etc legit, hard drive is NTFS, all i want to know is how to deactivate the CHK DSK. There is a partition called 'back up' which is FAT32, which i think is used for re-installing(which i don't want to or need to do).

Are you able to log on? Maybe in safe mode? If you can, then logon as administrator and run a command console.
    Start=>Run=>CMD
then type chkntfs /d and hit enter.
If your drive doesn't have the "dirty bit" set, this normally resets the schedule.

Fantastic i'll try that! I was thinking i might have to leave my PC on for a while.

I'll let you know how i get on.

    Many Thanks.

    Thanks, that did work.

I have read that Zone Alarm(that i use) can cause CHK DSK to fail.

What i was wondering was, is there actually any point running this service, if my HD seems to work fine.

Boot to the XP CD, choose the first recovery option (Press "R") and when you get to the command prompt run chkdsk /r on the partition(s) in question. It will run two scans and take a little while to finish - just let it run

Tim, I think his problem was chkdsk just looping over and over (chkdsk -> reboot -> chkdsk -> etc.) Had the same problem a few days ago, woke up and said "Wow chkdsk is taking a long time (not realizing it had been looping all night lol) I just used Last Known Good Configuration, and it that worked in my case.

Yes, thats more or less right. I've heard of other people having the same problem if they have Zone Alarm, as i do.
I can do those things, as you say, but if i do, will i lose all my data & is th eoperation really necessary?

Eddi I believe that the Section 5 component of CHKDSK is the scanning of the drives free space. Just out of curiousity why did you run check disk in the first place? If you weren't having any problems before you ran it I'd say your pretty safe not running CHKDSK from the recovery console. Also might want to check your event log (its in control panel -> administrative options (or is it tools) and finally even viewer. Post back if you find any errors pertaining to zone alarm or to disk error events. Good luck!

I've had a fairly good look and there doesn't seem to be anything relating to disk errors etc.
