    Hi

Have a slight issue with PC. When I turn the PC on and it starts to load, it stops with an error msg relating to a bad/corrupted Windows/System32 file.

i put in my Windows disk to run the repair option...

When the Windows screen loads, it says the following....

"The Recovery Console Provides System Repair & Recovery Functionality.
Type EXIT to Quit the Recovery Console & Restart the Computer.

    1: C\Windows

Which Windows Installation Would You Like To Log Onto
    <To Cancel, Press ENTER>?_"

When I type in '1', the PC doesn't do anything and just freezes so I have to switch off and repeat the process again only to come to the same point.

Can someone tell me what is wrong and what I need to do in order to get to the CHKDSK option?

    Thanks for your time

I'm assuming that the PC won't boot to your desktop.... if you have access to another PC, you could slave your HD in the working PC and run chkdsk that way. Or, boot to your XP disc, and do NOT press "R" for the Recoverry Console, instead press 'Enter' then press 'R' after that to perform a safe reload of Windows. 95% of the time, all your desktop settings and shortcuts will remain intact, and everything will be groovy. The other 5% of the time, you lose your shortcuts and file associations but all your documents (pictures, music, Word/Excel stuff, etc) will be OK, just none of your software will work. This usually only happens when the OS has some fairly serious issues or if the user profile(s) have been corrupted. In either case, all your documents WILL be fine. Before doing all this, you may choose to visit your hard drive maker's web site to download their diagnostic tool. Be sure to get the one that will allow you to create a bootable CD or floppy. Then boot to it to make sure your drive is healthy enough to hold data. Many of these diagnostics will also test the file structure for errors (similar to chkdsk) and give you the option to repair any problems. If any data loss may occur, the program will warn you....
    Good luck!

Slaving is what I would suggest. If you don't want to take your computer apart you could use a caddy and run a chkdsk using windows. I think I have one you can borrow ;)

I have a simular problem as this. I can actually get to the recovery mode cmd prompt so i type in:

    CHKDSK.

    It then comes up with:

The volume serial number is 9ce6-2f57
    CHKDSK is checking the volume...
    0% completed.

I left it for about 3-4hours and it was still at 0%!

reason im doing a chkdsk through the cmd is because my laptop recently came up with a missing hal.dl_ error and trying to rectify through the recovery cmd but it wouldnt let me till i did a CHKDSK.

Can anyone give me some help on how to fix this? I really need my laptop for work :(
