    Hi,
Hope all had a very merry XMAS. Wish all in Major Geeks happy New Year for 2007. When I run Chkdsk from "run" I get the following:
"The file system is NFTs. Vol label is HDD.
    Warning! F parameters not specified
    Running Chkdsk in read-only form".
Chkdsk then proceeds and everything is OK as far as I am concerned. Do I need to do anything here, as a result of this warning.
Specs: WinsXP Home SP2, Amd Sempron 1838Mhz, 768 DDR SDRAM, AVG Virus Scanner, Zone Alarm Firewall, SpywareGuard, Windows Defender. Thank You

If it didn't find any problems, you don't need to do anything more. If there are problems that need to be fixed, you have to append /F or /R. Like this:

READONLY ------ CHKDSK C: (or other drive)
NORMAL FIX ---- CHKDSK C: /F (or other drive)
EXTENDED FIX -- CHKDSK C: /R (or other drive)

If the partition contains files that are locked (e.g. the pagefile), you'll be prompted to reboot in order to run with the /F or /R parameters. /R takes quite a bit longer, but is more thorough; it's not a bad idea to run it once in a while when you've got the time.

Those examples all show checkdisk running on C: drive - (or other drive) means "Other than C:". I can see how it could be confusing, though.

    hi,
TY again. I meant the "F" in the warning in post 1.

That warning referred to the F parameter, not the F drive. Anytime you run a read-only CHKDSK you get that warning, to let you know that it won't fix any problems it finds.

    Hi,
TY for replying again. So How Do I run it, that it will fix any errors, as this is the reason I run it . TY.

I thought that was clear from my first post, but I'll try again. To run checkdisk on C: drive, type chkdsk C: /F , that will do a three-step process that fixes errors on the disk. If you add /R, it does a five-step process that also checks for bad sectors on the disc and recovers readable information. This takes a lot longer, especially if the partition isn't very full, because it also checks the free space.

If it asks you if you want to run it on the next startup, enter Y for yes, then restart the computer. I think that covers all the important points.

    Hi,
I've run CHKDSK /R a couple of times recently. When finished it just goes back to my Desktop! Should there not be a report of some sort somewhere? Thanks

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But when you I chkdsk on reboot, the report stays on the screen for only a second or two. There's no way to read it, if you weren't watching closely you'd miss it completely!

You can run chkdsk again in read only mode to get a report, but that's not perfect, either. If it comes up clean, great, but if it says there are still problems, there may or may not be - a bug in the read-only chkdsk causes it to sometimes report problems where there are none (this happened to me).

There is a way to see the report in the Event Viewer; that and much more is explained in this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHKDSK

For me, running chkdsk from the Recovery Console always gives me a readable report, but it is a lot more trouble. If you want more information about using the Recovery Console, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/

No problem. I think it's the time of year, we're all a little bit spacey. ;) In fact, I was about half drunk when I wrote my reply to Evanhoe, I'm just glad it still makes sense to me today!:D You're welcome, and Happy New Year to you, too!
