i let xp do it right from the start on its own.
and tried the recovery console from my xp cd.
i go to bed and get up and it always stoped at the same spot.
i cant think of anything to do. i saw a few regedits to skip it. but i rather have it really check my hd for error so it dont write data to a bad sector...

Do you run chkdsk from Start>Run or via Error Checking? If the former, do you add the f or r switches? What does Event Viewer report?

It could be that a program is running and has locked some of the files. If this happens it won't allow chkdsk to continue. Just possible it’s your AV. Try disabling it and then run chkdsk via My Computer – right click on the relevant drive icon, choose Properties, Tools tab, then click on the "Check Now" button in the "Error Checking" section. When that window loads, check both boxes, then click Start Now. Restart the computer and Error Checking will begin automatically after the restart.

did chkdsk /r from recovery console.
that is the most basic minimal way to run chkdsk.
its all done from a dos prompt.
windows will try to do the check on its own even if i do nothing.
but it stops/locks up after a while.
even from the recovery console chkdsk stops after 21% everytime.

I take it then that you haven't tried my suggestion.

Are you saying now that chkdsk starts automatically whenever you boot up? If so, do you ever get the following error message: 'Cannot open volume for direct access'?

    See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;160963

    Have you run sfc?

    Do you have PCanywhere installed?

i have tried the steps you talked about before my post.
the link you attached last time has a new option i did not know before.
chkntfs /x drive: [...] to skip the scan.
i would rather fix the drive for good and not skip anything.
    this the error i get
    chkdsk is verifiying files(1of3)
    82%
file record segmant xxxxxx is unreadable
file record segmant xxxxxx is unreadable
file record segmant xxxxxx is unreadable
ect.... let it go all night and it stops at one number 19000 something

Does sound as if some files are locked.

Does chkdsk start each time you boot up?

    Do you have Pcanywhere installed?

    Have you run sfc?

starts the chkdsk every time. it never finishes i have to restart the pc and skip the scan before it starts.

i dont have pc anywhere on my system.

    i ran sfc /scannow.

I do a lot of hard drive repairing. Here is what works for me. On the Majorgeeks home page click on Misc, download Ultimate Boot Disk and burn it to CD. Boot from the CD F1 for disk utilities find the maker of your drive and run the diagnotic to repair the drive. Then run chkdsk.

i am going to try this ultimatebootcd. it sounds the same but easier to make just burn a cd.
    http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html
i tried making a boot disk and letting Ultimate Boot Disk install what it needed but i had no luck. it would not start. just the boot disk would start.

out of all the crap i tried miniPE had the balls to fix the bad sectors and push its way through. the cd based OS has many many many usefull tools.
if all was lost you can even use it to boot your pc even if the normal os will not.

my data hd got so bad it would crash windows on bootup when it was pluged in. it would not even let me boot in to safe mode. it would crash the xps recovery console.
used miniPE booted right up into a nice gui let me see all my drives.
let me do all the scan disk options on my messed up drive with out locking up or crashing. even if i had to i could copy and paste any files to any drive.

    case closed
thanks for all the ealier help

I've heard of & played with 'Bart's PE', but haven't been able to find 'mini PE', just broken links. Do you have a link for it?
