When I rebooted tonight, my laptop (XP) went thru some sort of CHKDSK check, fixing a couple of orphaned files/sectors. WHY? I haven't seen this in at least a year, maybe 2-3.

I used to see it a LOT, but I can't recall the context. Perhaps the runup to my last PC (also XP) DYING?

Is this a precursor of a bad HDD or something?

but why would it suddenly DO the check in the first place?

i have a vague sense that it used to be in my BOOT routine. orphaned sectors or no, it seemed to RUN chkdsk pretty much every boot on the old PC.

where do i set this? i wonder if it's gotten changed somehow.

OTOH, hasn't done it the 4-5 reboots since i started the thread yesterday. just that one time.

    :confused

I have experienced an "apparent" chkdsk 5-10 in 10000 boots and this will only normally occur after a significant MS update. I would be doing some "rootkit" and full MALWARE scanning!
