Choice of older AMD CPU

I'm currently running a Duron 1.8ghz on an older ECS K7VMM motherboard w/ 1gb (2x512mb) PC133 SDRAM. XP Pro SP2. The max CPU I can run is an AthlonXP 2200+ which a friend of mine happens to be getting rid of. I'm not really gaming (nothing hardcore like DOOM3, FarCry, etc..), just some older games like the original Deadly Dozen, Call Of Duty, and the like. I mainly use the PC for internet stuff, music, and movies. So- would there be a noticeable benefit to installing the Athlon2200?? Should I just stick with the Duron 1.8? I might just buy the CPU as a back-up; my friend only wants like $15 or $20 for it...

I don't think you'll see much of a gain with the Athlon XP 2200+ unless there's a significant increase in the Athlon's efficiency over the Duron -- and I doubt that.

The Athlon XP 2200+ runs at 1800MHz, and I see your Duron runs at the same speed. And there are so many other factors that figure into overall performance that you have to make a big jump in processor speed to see a visible difference in performance without using benchmarking software.

But it never hurts to have a backup CPU, especially if you're given to tinkering with the setup. Every now and then, strange things happen....

 

Athlon XPs tend to be faster than Durons, but enough to be noticeable?

Hmmm, maybe in games. I'm not sure about most other things.
