Hi, today when i was booting up my computer I recieved a choice asking me:

    Choose operating system
    Windows Xp Professional (bootscreen)
    or
    Windows Xp Professional

and it gives me 30 seconds to decide which one. I've tried both and they do exactly the same thing.

Can somebody tell me if I didnt format my computer right or something? Because my boot did seem a little slower after this format. But I havn't had this message for a week after the format until now. Please explain to me why my boot became aproximately 10 seconds slower (all startup items and resources has been kept to the minimum). And why all of a sudden have to choose from two operating system that are the same?

    Thankyou =D

Well I had similar issues with this years ago, it turned out to be a nasty Trojan, which eventually rendered my PC unbootable, I suggest checking in the malware section to be sure. If all is clear, then we can continue in this thread.

Start / run / type "msconfig" without qoutes ...enter
In the boot.ini ...click the button to check boot paths ...

It says "It appears that all Boot.ini lines for Microsoft Operating System are OK."

i think this started happening when i tried to change my bootscreen. but i have already deleted the program that does that for me. So maybe I created two boot.ini files?

Would appear so ....should be safe to delete one....do a system restore point before so ...just to be safe.

    Simple.

Right click on "My computer", select properties. Go to the "Advanced tab", then select the button "Startup and recovery".

Under "System Startup", click the button "Edit".

This will open the boot.ini file within notepad.

The above is an example of the boot.ini file.

Typically this is all ye need. But, to be safe, copy and paste your boot.ini file here, and we will tell you what you need to remove, to fix this. :)

A note on how this is caused:
Programs which modify the bootscreen usually add a line to boot.ini to boot with your bootscreen. They do this because if the bootscreen should fail, you can still boot windows using the second option (without the bootscreen). Usually a backup of the original boot.ini is made in c:\ and named boot.ini.bak or boot.bak. Uninstalling the program will in most cases not revert boot.ini, unless you explicitly told it to do so (option in the program itself, before uninstalling). You can revert by replacing boot.ini with the backup.
