    Hi,
I've been having a problem for the past couple of weeks. I can't play avi files with Windows Media Player. Here's what happens: I open the file, the first frame comes up and then it just stops. I can manually move the progress bar and it will jump to that frame, but then it just stays there. If I move the progress bar back and forth alot, sometimes I can get the video to start playing, but there is never any sound. Then things get funny. If I restart my computer, and try to open an avi file, it works, sound and everything. Then when I open another one, it doesn't work. I downloaded Divx Player 6 and it plays the avi files with sound, but the video is kind of choppy. Also, Media Player is choppy as well, no matter what video files it plays. I have recently posted in the Malware forums and mentioned this problem and was told to try it in the software forums. It was also mentioned it may be a problem with the video settings. The only problem is that I'm an idiot and don't know how to adjust video settings. Things I think could be of importance: I recently got rid of alot of large files (around 10 gigs worth). Also, I had a problem with System Restore where it wouldn't restore any of my restore points. Then it deleted the restore points. Crazy. I recently went through the process of the READ ME RUN ME Malware cleansing. I have installed the Zone Alarm Firewall. That's all I can think of right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If any more information is needed, or if I'm in the wrong forum, just let me know. Oh yeah, I've never recieved any kind of error message when trying to play the avi files. Also, I've tried opening an avi file and just letting it sit. I let it sit for an hour and still didn't play. Ok, that's all.

How do I remove old codec packs?

Go to the control panel, add remove programs (for XP) or programs and features for Vista.. look for anything at all that has to do with codecs, and uninstall it.

Ok, I installed the K-Lite codec pack. I got rid of the files it said were broken during installation. The avi files play in both Media Player Classic and WMP with sound, but the video is still choppy. Also, I forgot to mention this in my first post, but when I'm using Internet Explorer, when I scroll up and down, the screen is kind of choppy as well. It isn't the smooth scrolling action I'm accustomed to, instead it skips down the page. This started the same time that the choppy video started. Anyways, is there any kind of adjustments I can make to solve the choppiness? Thanks.

you problems dont have anything to do with codecs. It seems to me your computer is 'busy' doing somethimg like diskeeper performing a defrag or other intense operation being performed in the background. Think of what softwares you installed about the time of the slow downs and remove a few softwares to solve the issue.
