    This one has me stumped.
I am repairing a Gateway GT5012 computer for my granddaughter. Bestec power supply went out, and as I now know is common, it fried the Motherboard. Bought an identical replacement motherboard and reinstalled everything with a new power supply. Works great. Except that I get a window each time the computer boots up stating
"Windows could not load installer for Keyboard. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance".
Then it gives me the search screen to find the driver, but it always fails to find one.
This is then repeated for "mouse".
In the Device Manager, under keyboard, it shows an unknown device. If I click on it to view properties, it gives me the same error message as above.
    Same for the mouse.
Same for the hard disc (which I believe is the hdc message).

I copied the following from the setupapi.log

    [2010/01/20 20:11:53 1288.3 Driver Install]

Windows could not load the installer for Keyboard. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

There is no SysSetup.Dll in the system32 directory. I copied this file from the I386 directory over to the system32 directory, but it did not change anything.

I have attached the Everest Report Summary and for Hardware.

I ran the Unknown Devices program, but it did not show any. However, under keyboards and mouse, it listed several unknown devices. Not sure why the program did not show them when I asked it to print out only the unknown devices. I took a screen shot and saved it in a Word file and have attached it as well.

I don't have the XP discs from Microsoft since this is a Gateway machine. All they give you are recovery discs. I have tried to use their recovery system to get this fixed to no avail. I also checked the bios, but it appears to be the currently available one.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi

Just so this is in my head, when you changed the mobo, you just plugged in the HDD and booted, and no new install of XP was done?

I would be tempted to install the Chipset Driver again and its HERE at Gateway for that model, then reboot, then delete everything under mouse and pointing devices as well as Keyboards and reboot and if XP doesnt automatically on reboot install the mouse & keyboard drivers, enter Device Manager and scan for new hardware.

My thinking even with an identical mobo, is that windows thinks when it booted for the first time that this is a different mobo and duplicated the drivers for keyboard and mouse.

You may be right, but I have tried to delete all of the drivers for the keyboard and the mouse and it won't let me do it. Neither in normal nor in safe mode. It gives me an error message that the devices are needed for bootup and kicks me out.

As to your first question, "yes", I just plugged everything back into the new mobo and booted up. Works fine except for these errors and they don't interfere with the way it works. I just click them off and everything works fine. What is strange is that I used both PS2 and USB keyboards and mice and got the same message regardless. Both types worked equally well.

    Thanks,
