Small but irritating problem. I want my new XP laptop to use classic view with windows and the start bar. I change it using dektop properties but after I reboot this change has not been saved and I'm back to fancy XP look.

    any siggetsions?

My suggestion is to not change it via Display properties, but rather System Properties. Here's how:

    1. Hit windows key + break (or right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Properties')
    2. On the 'System Properties' dialog, select the 'Advanced' tab
    3. Under 'Performance', press the 'Settings' button
    4. On the 'Performance Options' dialog, press the radio next to 'Adjust For Best Performance'
    5. Apply your settings.

Now, Windows will configure its interface to the 'Classic View' that resembles Windows 2000. This is a great change to make to save CPU cycles and memory addresses, and boost performance.

This was an interesting detour but the changes to the interface still didn't stick after reboot. Even the in the properties area you showed me, this change did stick.

Have been on a detour to Kelly's corner and there was a fix there but STILL the changes doen't stick after reboot.

Try clicking START, then RUN, then type in:
    services.msc (press enter)

    Next scroll down to "themes".
Right click on themes and select STOP.
Next double click on themes and change "startup type" to DISABLED. Press ok. Reboot the machine. Does this help?

Are you logged on in the admin account ? If not, that could be one reason why it is resetting on restart.

You can also try start>settings> taskbar and start menu
Go to start menu tab and check classic start menu

You may have a virus or malware that disabled changes. Easiest way to fix would be to download dial-a-fix and run that. DAF will automatically show any permissions that should be reset.

TheeFool wins the prize for the correct answer! Thanks for that! Don't understand why I had to go to these lengths, this is a brand new computer so there shouldn't be any malware or virus. Ran all the antivirus anti malware stuff anyway and found nothing.

Thanks to all who made the effort to help on such a small problem

    cheers
