    Hi

I am having a lot of problems trying to perform a clean install of xp on my computer.

currently i have xp SP2 installed

when i autoplay my service disk (with xp on it) it says the the copy on the disk is older than my installed version and will not let me procede

if i boot from cd on start up and try to install this way, i cannot locate my c drive, the only options for install are showing my g,h,i,j drives (virtual daemon tools creations) but no c?? and when i hit any key i get a blue error screen and a locked computer

any ideas on how to solve this will be appreciated greatly

    Regards to you all

    RR :p

It looks like an old school fdisk and format might be in order. Make a boot disk that has the fdisk, format, catalogue, and a few other important *dos* commands. Make sure you have some CD Drive drivers on there as well in case your mobo does not autodetect. Fdisk, create paritiion, format, install XP.

I am sure there is an explanation for the trouble you are having, but this just might negate all that troubleshooting you will otherwise do.

    Good Luck!

Your problem is probably because you have MS updates installed on your existing set up.So of course your Cd is now not up to date .Ujanus

You can do one of the following:

    1. Put the XP CD in and boot the computer, Select Repair, enter the recovery console, select the XP installation you want to repair, issue the command diskpart at the command prompt, delete the partition and create a new one.

    2. Download the disk partitioning and format tools from your drive manufacturer, delete the old partition, create a new NTFS partition.

Install Windows, update your drivers, install SP2.

    Thanks for all replies

    epecially ujanus
it appears all my problems came from the fact i was trying to reinstall/upgrade with a non SP2 upgraded version of xp,,my pc shipped with SP2 installed, but the recovery disc was not upgraded to SP2 and would not recognise my SATAdrive at all...grrrrr,

anyway i am now happily looking at the blue format screen, slowly chugging through my 200Gb of HD space..lets hope thats the end of my problems

    once again thanks
