besides wearing a wrist strap etc is it a good idea to press the power button for a couple of seconds after unplugging the pc to discharge remaining power?

It wouldn't hurt but waiting for the mobo LED to die is just as good. I just wait 10 secs until I start ripping stuff out, never blew anything yet.

It would not hurt but it is not going to do anything either. The power button simply shorts two pins on the motherboard. There is not a charge on those two pins that needs to be discharged.

If one of the first things you do is unplug, then by the time you remove the side panel, it should be safe to reach in - assuming your wrist pad is properly attached, or you touch bare metal first. The key thing is to unplug. Simply shutting the computer down does not remove the +5Vsb standby voltage required by the ATX Form Factor standard. If your PSU has a master power switch in back, you can set that to off - but, that assumes that $.25 switch is working properly and the PSU is in perfect working condition. IMO - not worth the risk, so always unplug.

I learned a lot from your message.
I have the wrist band which is appropriate to use over a again.
I think I have the idea now and thank you.
