Might be worth a look at the trial version of RegSupreme. It costs a tiny bit, but the guy who write jvPowerTools wrote it, it's good, and when I had run RegScrub and another Reg cleaner and they both said the reg was clean and there was NO deadwood: nothing to correct ... RegSupreme found almost 1000 (that's a thousand) dead entries. I read them all, and decideed it was right, and dumped them all, and everything has been fine ever since: no problems.

Just worth a consider if you're really looking for cleaning power. It'll be in the next version of PowerTools, if you want to wait for that, but PT caosts a bit more than the standalone RS.

what does cleaning your reg actually do for PC performance?

Use Regsupreme or Powertools. The registry is constantly accessed by windows. It stores much of the misc info for windows (windows key, installed programs, etc.) Over time the registry become3s filled with obsolete entries. Maybe the last program you uninstalled didn't remove everything or something. Passing over these entries wastes preccious milliseconds. Registry cleaners simply remove these useless entries so windrows doesn't waste time reading them everytime.

In jv16PowerTools, there's a Tools item in the menu bar in the Registry Tools section that many users just don't notice or use. The original jv registry cleaner is there. There's another version under Tools in the menu bar of jv's RegCleaner.

But RegSupreme is more than just an update of those cleaners: it has an entirely new, extremely fast engine, and its settings are much finer than those of its predecessors: MUCH finer than the settings of RegScrubXP, which was the king of reg cleaners until RegSupreme stomped it completely, IMO.

So, if you clean your reg with every other reg cleaner you've ever used, and then properly install and run RegSupreme, it will find LOTS of deadwood that the others ALL missed. And if you run ANY of the others AFTER you run RegSupreme and let it fix everything it finds, NONE of the others will find ANYthing.

Now, THAT'S the definition of a "supreme" cleaner.

One parting note on the use of Reg Supreme: There may be quite a few entries in your registry that are re-created on the next boot every time you delete them, and there may be some that are place-holders for things you don't have now, but MIGHT have sometime. Use RegSupreme with a little intelligence, because this isn't an AI program: it just FINDS the dead links, it doesn't evaluate them.

For instance, MSWorks, if you are stuck with that, recreates the entries you kill. And, as an example of the second sort, I have a mail-checker that has spaces for 20 mailboxes, and creates empty registry slots for the settings of all 20. I only use four maiboxes of the 20. I don't want RegSupreme to fix those entries when it finds them, because it's a pointless exercise, and might lead to errors in the future.

SOLUTION: jv put a file in the Data folder called DefaultIgnoreList. It opens in Notepad or any text editor. When your scan finds things you don't want it to kill, copy the words in the Entry column of the scan report to your DefaultIgnoreList file. Usually, that's clear and simple, but if the error is a Key, all that appears in the Entry column is "{Key}". Then, you have to copy some of the words from that Keyname line (preferably ones toward the end of it) to the DefaultIgnoreList.

Once you've set up your IgnoreList carefully, RegSupreme will not report on that set of deadwood anymore.

Read the entries RegSupreme finds, skip the ones you think might be dead but important for possible future use, and then proceed. The program isn't smart, it's just extremely GOOD at what it does. It's the USER that's supposed to be smart. BE smart. Evaluate the results before you hit Fix.

(Standard disclaimers. I am not associated in any way ..., I just think it's the best new utility to appear in a long time, and want to help spread the word about it.)

I've been looking at Regsupreme to buy but also considering the last free version of JV16 (v.1.3.0.196). What functions can JV16 do that Regsupreme can't. Is there any advantage to having both i.e. Regsupreme for it's stand alone registry cleaning functions and JV16 to do functions Regsupreme can't.

    NOTE TO MARJORIE

    Marj,

My suggestion is that you go ahead and get the free version of jv 16 PT while yopu still can, and BUY the commercial (but v. inexpensive) RegSupreme.

The various other functions of PT include the ability to edit your startups, your Add-Remove list, your file types list, and your New documents list. The Help explains all of that if you need help, and using those functions is dirt simple. None of those has been improved, so far's I can see, but RegSupreme is MUCH better than the registry cleaner in the Tools menu of the Reg Tools section of the old jv 16.

If you want to use the free version of jv 16 alone (and go to Registry Tools, Tools in the menu bar, Registry Cleaner), you'll be fine, and you can then buy the next release version of jv 16 when it comes out, with RegSupreme built into it..

    Your choice.

    Note to Wisewiz

Thanks for clarifying my question. My leaning was to do as you suggested to buy Regspreme and get the last free version of PT for the additional functions PT has. My only worries are that I'll clear something I shouldn't have but I plan to back up my registry before doing anything. I'm hoping there is a good help menu in the programs. Oh well I'll just have to take the leap of faith sometime.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

    Marj.

If you need any HELP ...

    Marjorie,

You may not find the help you need in the Help files of those progs, so if you have questions about the use of them, this forum is a good place to ask.

Some of us here are old hands at both of them.

I finally tried RegSupreme today. It really is fast and thorough, but I miss the option of making the exclusion list.
