i have been trying to increase the performance upon start up and after removing some things from add/remove progs i want to do more by clearing up any wasted values on the registry - and with a whole bunch of spyware i have had lately i am sure that there is loads.

I have looked at a couple of the freeware registry cleaners and am thinking about downloading one. i was wondering which is a good one to try and also how to make a backup of the registry and how to use that backup if a registry cleaner messed things up.

    any advice would be usefull......

    thanks

You might want to just reinstall your OS. Start with a clean slate. .02. I just put all my music and stuff on the C:drive and did a partial reinstall, and it cleared up all manner of crappy problems I'd been having. Don't ask me how, though. I called Dell and cried like a little baby. ;)

i was hoping to not have to go as far as that - seems a bit extreme but if it comes to it......

i dont have any real problems other than i frustratingly slow start up.... not even sure if a registry cleaner is going to help but every time i switch on i go make a coffee and come back when its finshed starting up five mins later!

ccleaner comes up with a whole bunch of issues on the registry but i havent fixed any yet (bottled it) - any idea if i should?

    What OS are you using?

At startup how many items do you end up with in your system tray? as here is an area you can remove some applications from starting up at boot... only real things you need to run at boot are Firewall, AV, Internet connection etc

    Have you Defragged lately?

as for Registry cleaning software then these are good free ones

    Regcleaner
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html
This also does a backup of what you remove just incase some thing maybe using the removed key... not that I have ever had any problems with this software but the backup is good peice of mind.

    WT RegCleanerXP 1.20
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3560.html
    again makes backups.

something to check whats starting up on your pc at boot,

    Startup Inspector
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4075
I like this software once you click consult it gives you an idea what each of the apps are so you can decide if you wish them to startup at boot time.

    Hi Drinking Fish
I have been using RegSeeker for a year or more. I used the v 1.2 beta and now the v1.35 beta. It is free download just over 1 MB. It is very user friendly.

If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to see them. I'd feel better about it if it were windows. That way it seems less likely they'd delete something important. thx
