I'm cleaning up a friend's computer and in Add/Remove programs I find the following entries:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05

Is it OK to delete the earlier version?

Both of those a out of date. Install the latest version of Java which is 1.5.0_06 and uninstall both 1.4.2_03 and 1.4.2_05
