I have downloaded and installed CleanMem 1.5.1 and find that there was no desktop shortcut installed. I opened C>Program Files>CleanMem and found the CleanMem.exe application, but when I try to execute the file, nothing happens. There isn't any suitable app. starter in Startup>Programs>CleanMem either.

    Any suggestions?

An alternative, I might suggest, that I use is:

    FreeRAM XP Pro 1.52

    Great rating out of 5.0

No waiting 30 minutes for it to do its' thing. :cool
Double click on the numeric RAM figure, down by the clock, if you want an immediate RAM update, or just let it do its' thing according to your defaults.

I have used it for years and it is a must have on any PC I have, or work on.

Checking that RAM figure, by eyeball, immediately points out any RAM hoggers when compared to the RAM figure that you get used to seeing.

You don't wait 30 minutes for it to do its thing, it does its thing every 30 minutes automatically. If you need to free ram more frequently than that, your computer has issues.

I used to use Free Ram XP and it was pretty good in its day, but it hasn't been updated since 2006 and isn't recommended on anything newer than XP.

MG states suitable for Win All.

It depends on your default settings, re RAM clearing. Nothing to do, IMO, with computer issues for me and my laptop.

Author states Platforms: Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, 2003 Server, XP (NT4.x is unsupported)

I always go by what the author of the program recommends, MG has been known to be incorrect in the operating system listing from time to time. Not trying to get argumentative with you, just saying I feel CleanMem is better and is more-up-to-date. If FreeRam XP works for you, stick with it :)

    Hi

I actually like CleanMem and once you read the info that Solaris posted in that this app has no GUI as it runs via task scheduling (steps to view and change the task options are in the link posted earlier but are HERE for ease of finding), I do run it on a netbook but thought the 30mins is adequate for Windows 7 as Windows 7 and Vista do have better memory management than XP.

Yes the "supported windows versions" this is something on the cards to be changed at some point in the future, in the past we didnt have the new versions of Windows like Vista and Win7 which radically changed the way some apps where or where not supported by the different Win versions, so I would agree while we do state Win All, it may not be all of them as at times some apps are updated and the new update may drop support for say WinME/98 etc or may drop XP so always best to check with the developer any updated support info.

But in the end its all about choice and while one thing works for me it may not for others, the object is to try them out and see. We also need to stick to the topic at hand and it was CleanMem that the Original Poster was wanting support on, at times alternates are great to suggest, but not always and for one reason in this thread, we dont know the posters Windows version, so an alternate "may" not work well or at all, thus possibly causing other issues. (just something to think about at times)

@garyasta could you tell us what Windows version you using?
plus the info that Solaris posted on CleanMem will help you as this is a great app as I mentioned I use this on my netbook and its set and forget over an app you may need to click to release ram or may actually use a bit of extra ram itself as it is running in the background.

    Hi All

Many thanks for your composite replies.

On checking the Task Scheduler (a little different in WINXP than the examples shown in the posts), I found that CleanMem was running and that I could adjust the timing.

    We'll see how things go.

    Cheers

    I have 1270MB.

Originally there was 512 (2x256), but i removed a 256 and replaced it with a 1024 and this sped up the laptop no-end. However, I'm always looking for the best performance possible (a mad athlete type).

    Cheers
