I keep getting a pop-up when I go to the above url. It tells me that I need to click to run an activeX program on this page. I have downloaded and installed the latest fix for the activeX problem. I tried doing everything I know how to get this pop-up stopped. I checked in Internet options and saw that shockwave activeX is installed. I checked to see if I have "allow activeX to download" and I do. I tried clicking on it and then rebooting. I tried clicking on it and hitting ENTER. (all or most of these things I did were at the suggestion of someone on another forum.

Does anyone here have any experience with this problem? If so, what did you do to fix it?

Do you know what the active-x control is. You need to be really careful what you allow to run. Turn off the option to allow activex controls to run . Your going the right way (or wrong depending on how you look at it) to get infected with all sorts of little nasties.

I'm not even going to click on that link to see what it is.

The chances are that it needs a newer version of the schokwave or flash player.

I suggest you also read this particularily point 7.

Matt is absolutely right. Activex controls in the wrong hands can do alot of damage to your system.

What operating system are you on? What service pack? I'm willing to bet that you have IE configured to always prompt you to script that control, which is probably a good thing in this case. I wouldn't want them freely running code on my system. That would be a good way to get your computer infected with spyware and viruses.

I have the latest version of shockwave.

This is a game site. I don't believe it will work without allowing activeX to run.

I find it odd that experts on other pages have NEVER said anything about activeX being dangerous.

There is a website much like this one, called Virtual Doctor. They are the ones who tried to help me with this problem and ran out of ideas.

I would guess that they are as qualified as the people who run this website. I base that on the fact that they know much more than me about computers and fact that I don't know for a fact what qualifications people have here the same way I don't know personally what qualifications they have at Virtual Doctor. People can call themselves experts either here or there. Who am I to say?

Well to fix your problem try uninstalling your current schockwave player and reinstalling the newest one (10.1 I think)

I'm no 'expert' but it asked me for nothing and none of my security was attempted to be breached. However, there was a pop-under from tribalfusion for an ad for the davinci code. This maybe the problem. I use FF 1.5 Just a little note, unless you're lonely for spam, I would never give them my addy.

I'm sorry. I thought I said that. That was one of the things I already tried. I uninstalled the version of shockwave I had and installed the latest version which is 10.1.1

    Any other ideas?

What is tribalfusion? Everytime I hit a link for anywhere in MajorGeeks, it says at the bottom of the page that it is waiting for a.tribalfusion.com to load.

The other "experts" also thought it might be a problem with the website .

So that seems to help as it may be confirmation.

I see no pop-up for any kind of spam. And they have never sent me any spam email.

    Where would I find Firefox?

BTW, is there any way to get around having to log-in every time I reply to this thread?

Never mind about the question where to find firefox. I see you have a download page for browsers.

BUT -- I still want to know why I have to log in every time I reply to a post. I clicked "remember me" and that didn't work. It asked for my user name and password anyway.

It wasn't me who asked the question about Tribal Fusion.

I also seem to have gotten my answer about needing to log in every time I reply to a post. Apparently, since it didn't ask me this time, when I clicked "remember me" and reloaded, that did the trick.

I will download Firefox later when I have time. At this point I am desperate enough to try anything.

The other experts sent me some code to forward to the webmaster of the page in question. I tried it, but they didn't respond. Their tech support people don't seem to care very much.

i thought that prompt was microsoft's "fix" for security issues, letting you know that an activex script was going to run (one that you already have loaded). I believe it was issued as one of the updates not that long ago.

btw, i didn't get the prompt when i clicked on the link

when i clicked around a bit, i did get that prompt, then it said that there was an update for shockwave.

It's Microsoft protecting you from malware. Here is some info about moneyballs.com you should read: http://www.lottalottos.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1116
This is your Virtual Dr's thread, I assume: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=207286
You never should put any internet site in your Trusted Sites. I'm pretty sure it's a major security no-no. I'd recommend you take the advice you get here instead.

I downloaded a fix for this last year and was told that it would expire in June. It did. But when I downloaded the fix last year, I stopped getting the prompt. That's why I was surprised when I downloaded the latest fix and kept getting the prompt. Also, I am surprised to hear that you clicked on the link and didn't get the prompt. Are you running a different browser than IE? Or maybe we can explore this and find out what is different about my system or set-up or whatever? Maybe you can tell me what the deal is with your system or whatever and I can then tell if mine matches or differs.

When you say you clicked around, exactly where on the page did you click? I did get a message a few months ago asking me if I wanted to dowload the latest version of shockwave, but I declined thinking I had the latest version. I've since downloaded the latest version.

i looked a little more into it, and there was an update this past april that would give you that prompt on some pages. do a search at microsoft.com for it. i didnt find anything specific, but i pretty sure it's there. that is also why if you have noticed, that you have to click on different flash/shockwave/etc. items before you can actually use them

    smokingun,

Thanks for your continuing efforts to help. However, I have downloaded that update you are referring to here. Virtual Doctor's "experts" directed me to it. Also, the only page I was getting that prompt on was moneyballs and after others directed me a forum about game scams I have decided that I am through with moneyballs since it is the number one scammer by all accounts.

Again, thanks for trying to help.

I'm not a "computer geek" so I don't know what the lingo is, but I'm very confused after reading this thread.

I'm not sure if this is the same as the pop-up thing you're talking about but when I try to click on something a box appears around it and says "click to activate and use this control" It didn't use to do this but I got a pop up to download activex control and now that's what happens. I've read through this thread but I'm still not completely sure if activex control is a good thing or a bad thing... but what I want to know is how do I stop if from making the boxes around things?

    Ashley,

I don't why you're getting a box around anything when you try to use something that needs activeX. The only pop-up I got appeared below the thing I was trying to do. I too got that message about downloading activeX, but I didn't respond to it. I would say you only have two options: Either go into internet control and disable the control that allows activeX to work or else go to SEARCH and find activeX and delete it. Then you can go to the msnlibrary and find the fix for activeX which you will need to download.

If that doesn't help then you need to ask someone who knows more about it than me.
