Clicking Problems

When i make 1 click on a file, 1 out of 3 times the file will open up.
When i try to make a selection of a file, 1 out of 3 times the selection won't work.

The big surprise here is that after i've just uninstalled the mouse and then unplugged it and plugged back in, the first 30 seconds went great. I've made 30 selections perfectly, with no issues. Went as nothing's wrong.

Then slowly, in the following 30 seconds, it started to get ugly again.

I've posted virus logs and it seems that there's no malware. It still seems like a malware to me though ... but i'm no expert, so ... i would very much appreciate some help with this.

    Using Windows XP SP3
mouse is Fujitsu Siemens with spinning ball (old one, but gold one)

I used to have this issue with the previous windows as well and after reinstall, the mouse worked well. Which suggests me it's not the mouse as the bug.

Now that the bug has returned, and according to majorgeeks, there's no malware, i'm thinking that maybe there's a virus that might have been cleaned up, but left some damages behind that need fixing.

I would prefer not to reinstall the windows.

I've made a desktop video recording so you ca see this in action

This might sound like the 'most obvious' possible step to try out; but have you tried doing a Windows Restore - going back to a particular 'Windows Restore Point' date and time that this 'clicking' problem did not exist?

Here are the very basic steps to take:

1)-Go to the Start Menu then to Programs
2)-Then Accessories and finally System Tools
    3)-Select System Restore
4)-Select Restore my computer to an earlier time
    5)-Click on Next
6)-Choose from the calendar posted on the restore point (left)
7)-Choose from the list on the right (if a choice is possible) the specific restore point
    8)-Click on Next
    9)-Click on Next

The system will reboot to restore the files (recently) modified systems back to the date that you have chosen in the steps above.

Side Notes: You could also try using the Windows System Restore utility in 'Safe Mode' as well. To find out how to do this, Click Here: Start your computer in safe mode - Windows - Microsoft

You might also want to 'copy and save' the above steps; either to a Word document or perhaps save this page to your browsers 'favorites folder' for future reference.

Additionally, have you tried using another mouse (an entirely different one, I mean)?

COMPUABLE, thank you for your feedback.
i disabled restoring points from the first day i started the windows clean install... oops :)
i have used the steps you just mentioned, to see if there's some restore points from anti-malware programs (those usually do this: like avast), and my last restore point is today .. :)

so, unfortunately, we need to skip this one ... which might have worked probably for the best.

just changed the mouse to an old optic one. turns out it works well.

Just one more thing i need to ask/clarify.
I'm afraid i'm either doing something wrong on my PC, or there's a virus that ruins mouses. So i need to make sure i can rule out the 1st one.

2 years ago i was having 3 mouses: the oldest mouse was non optic (same one as from 1st post), 2nd was optic with 800dpi, 3rd was optic 2k dpi

I was using the 800dpi one, and decided to replace it with the 2k dpi.
the 2k dpi started having same clicking problems as described in the 1st post, above. and replaced it with the non-optic.
now the non-optic behaves as the 2k dpi, with same errors.

Now, that you reminded me to switch mouses, turns out it was a good decision. so i'm back to using the 800dpi, which seems to be runing smooth.

I'm afraid though that i'm seeing a pattern here. I'm afraid i'll have to throw this one to garbage as well in few months.

Is there something i should avoid doing in particular to damaging mouses ?
Is there a virus that breaks mouses ?

Oh no, that's a shame. Sorry it didn't work out for you. I never disable system restore and I do not advise doing so either. Although Windows Restore is far from perfect; it has saved my hide literally dozens of times over the years, since I'm constantly testing out new freeware - which sometimes can accidentally muck up the system in the process. One very quick question: Did you try using Safe Mode (when you tried the Windows Restore applet earlier) and does the 'clicking' problem persist while in Safe Mode? If you care to try it out; you can go to the following link for instructions: Windows XP - Start the computer in safe mode

Glad to hear that using another mouse actually worked for you... As for your question: "Is there a virus that breaks mouses?" although I cannot know for sure whether or not you have a "virus affects the mouse" but Googling that phrase garners 'About 38,700,000 results' so there's a always a chance you might be infected, however my best guess would be that I think your problem may very well related to your having been using the old Fujitsu Siemens mouse - with possibly outdated drivers, perhaps.

    >> Is there something I should avoid doing in particular to damaging mouses <<

Yes, well for that question; I would strongly recommend that you should immediately go to that particular 'optic mouse' manufacturer's website and download the very latest drivers directly from the 'support' section of that site.

Not having the very latest, updated drivers can often cause all sorts of problems with mice (and sometimes keyboards as well); especially when using the 'wireless' types.
