I have a desktop computer with a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP4 TH mother board and an Intel core i5-3470 processor and 16GB of RAM. I have a 500gb boot HDD C:, and a 1000gb storage HDD E: and a DVD D:.

I am trying to clone my boot HDD on my computer to a new Samsung 960 EVO SSD. While it appears to have cloned, I am not able to swap it AND make it work. I can return to the original setup and everything still works fine, so at least I still have an operating computer.

My intention was to clone the 500gb C: boot drive to a 500gm Samsung 860 EVO SSD and then to remove the original boot 500gb HDD and swap it for the new cloned 500gb SSD. While the cloning process seemed to have worked the rest of my plan has not.

When I swapped the 500GB HDD with the cloned 500GB SSD and booted I got a blue screen with a Error Code 0xc000000e message. I then left the original 500gb boot drive in place as well as the 1000GB storage HDD and connected the SSD to the D: drive SATA and power cables and changed the boot order, but still no luck. I also created a boot USB and played with that, but with no positive outcome.

I can find everything with windows explorer, so it is there and sightable, but not useable. I tried chkdsk, but a message with comments similar to "you have to be an administrator" came up.

I have clone a few times with different programs, but still the same outcome. Any advice PLEASE!!

I have tried Samsung Migration, Easyus, and Macrium Reflect and all with the same results. I am running windows 10. Brian DJ

I am not sure if you have resolved your issues but in the event that you have not, when you say you have cloned the original 500GB HDD, do you mean cloned the entire disk in one go or cloned each individual partition one at a time?

Also you say that you have a desktop pc which you used for this purpose. Did you clone the new drive by connecting it to one of the SATA ports on the MB or via USB?

    Good Luck

Thanks for your reply. I tried to clone the entire HDD and on each occasion with 3 different programs it said it did it successfully. I connected the SSD to the Sata cables of the optical E: drive for the cloning process. The computer had been working fine before I stated this project and just before I started the clone I discovered that the PC would not boot unless both the 500 C: boot drive and 1000GB D: Data drive were installed, it would only boot if both were installed, so perhaps part of the operating system had installed on the 2nd data HDD.

As a result I decided to do a fresh install of windows 10 on the new SSD and reinstall my software programs and transfer my old data. After quite some time I am now sort of back to normal. The PC operates on the new SSD and will still operate on the old twin system provided I connect both of the old drives, so I am still able to get old data if I need it.

Being mid 70's and retired, time was not a real problem and I did rekindle some old and new computer skills, but I was not able to reinstall Movie Maker, as it is no longer supported by Microsoft. I downloaded Shortcut, but it does not have as many uses as Movie Maker from what I have seen so far anyway.

Thanks again for your interest. Brian DJ.

Thanks Eldon. I had a direct install Movie Maker previously, probably from my old MS Office Professional and I still have Movie maker on my laptop, but will download your suggestion of Essentials on my new SSD and give it a try. Brian DJ
