    Hey guys,

As my company data grows I am looking at possible back-up systems to use.

Using your assistance I think I have a pretty good external usb back-up system. My concern is of course fire or something strange I can't prepare for that knocks out my back-ups.

I have been reluctant with using a cloud back-up system but I am back to considering it.

My concern is how secure is my data? If not to secure could password protect and encrypt and files before uploading them?

    What do you guys thing?

Most if not all pocket drives come with a back up solution. Personally, backups are only as good as the person who does it, and the medium that is chosen to do the archiving.

I was in a similar position to yourself. I use 2 USB external hard drives, both are stored away from the computer. This way you are protected if one of the backup drives dies.

Couple of things to bear in mind:

    1) The data on the backup drives is not necessarily secure, so maybe worth looking at encryption to secure it, say in case the backup drive got stolen.
    2) If your backing up in case your PC dies, then this backup solution is fine. However if you are backing up, in case you loose a file, then you need to make sure you account for this when backing up.

I use a program from Microsoft at the moment called SyncToy, which literally synced two folders, 1 being on the PC, the other folder on the External drive.

Hey guys thank you for the advice.

So I assume that cloud storage is something you guys DON'T recommend?

I am using Cobian Back-up and love it.

I don't have an issue with making a back-up and keeping it in a safety deposit box but I have had some bad experience with USB external drives. They work fine and then the drive isn't used for some length of time and then when plugged in months later it wont work.

My fear is storing the drive in a safety deposit box and then when I need to access it its dead.

What I figured I would do is back-up on two external drives here in the office and then back-up on a cloud drive just in case I have a fire or complete melt down.

I'll mention www.adrive.com for cloud storage. I've had a free account with them for several years. But, you might want a paid account since the free account does not use SSL encryption when logged on to the site. For some info on their plans, see http://www.adrive.com/plans

If you do get a free account, I believe you could, as you mentioned, use some encryption software on your computer to encrypt and password-protect files before uploading them. I've never tried that but it seems feasible.

    Thank you.

I must have been looking in the wrong section because it was saying $200+ per month which is out of the question.

6.95 per month is much more reasonable.

Yeah...wondering what program is best to encrypt password protect and upload.

    Winrar??

I'm gonna second ADrive, I also have had an account for several years. 50 GB free, always there...

As far as encryption goes, I'll need to test it with a PW protected 7Zip file....
