I cannot seem to get the spring loaded battery out.
However, if I do, is there a way to record the setup information as I think it is erased when the battery is changed?
I notice in thetask tray there is an F( which says optimized defaults. I make no changes so would that do it?
    TY

    HI Peter

Sometimes you need to get a very small blade screwdriver to push against the spring and the battery will pop out. Yes information will be reset to default, no easy way to save the setup info apart from write it down per option tab or take a digital photo of the pages.

If you have never changed any options then optomised defaults is a good option, but always check date and time is accurate once replaced the battery.

Which direction do you push that spring ; up left right, straight forward?
I do not want to break it but it seems not to want to move.

Outwards or away from the battery. You do want to be gentle, there's no going back. If you remove it and replace it your information should be saved.

Outward away from the battery -I have it now; perhaps that and a little blade under the battery to pop it up.

I am also having trouble getting the 20 pin big connector out. I squeeze the clip or latch and pull up to no avail. Maybe again I need to put a blade under the latch and squeeze and pull. I think once it starts to give like a broken seal, it may work.
I am trying to resurrect the old beast.
Thank you all for your advice.

P.S. Speaking of new pc's, how do you reinstall an OS if the PC does not come with a disc or flash drive. Can you use a download like tech bench and use a key you get with the PC?

The wide connectors might just need a light wiggle side to side and be SURE that the clip is free and pushed in.

Reinstalling is tricky. You might get an OEM copy and use the key you have but success rates vary. If you have a USB port, you can get it done with a thumb drive.

I currently have the thumb drive and you are right as it is the way to go. A new PC is going to be tricky as you say.

I do not plan on using anything I have now with the new PC - I will do it their way legally as long as I can do a fresh or clean install. That will require a new key at least if not media with it or a download with the key..
I don't care for the installation discs that you create as they just put the OS back to factory but with all their clutter.
    TY - Peter

If you get stuck, I have done factory installs (sometimes you can do Windows only) and just spent an hour with IObit Uninstaller batch removing and cleaning it up. It's an option if you get stuck buying a key. There's other ways, as you know :)

    Thanks for that.
I just unearthed some information not new to you but it is to me. The author said to use a disc and the product key on the new machine.
He said you can get the ISO form Digital Rivers. I used DR for my office suite but they dropped the support a few years later so I would rather have a source more reliable. I was wondering if you could get the ISO from MS/Windows to use with same product key on the side of the new machine?
A stick like that would be great if it could be done.

For others help - I chatted with a PC company and for $30 you get a flash drive with OS and drivers and it is a .WIM file for clean installations.

Yes Digital River disappeared in 2015 sometime as it was more the download location for the HUP (Home User Programme) which corporates, Gov (for employees), Education and charities etc used, you can with a "retail" key and not an "oem" one get the ISOs for Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 from Microsoft

    Windows 7
    Windows 8.1
    Windows 10

A valid licence key is needed before download.

Thank for that, David. I am all set now but was wondering about a new PC as I keep fixing this old one.
I was told, when you power up the first time, you get a phone call and are then good to go. If you reset you need no key anymore and do not need media.

D... will sell you a stick with the drivers and OS for $30 but I would not think that necessary if you can do it with Windows with a new PC.

When you say with a retail key and not OEM that means you pay for it in a store or Windows but not via a company like HP or Dell or Sony, or do have the original manufacturer equipment wrong?

Incidentally I have the parts for a PC I may build but still on paper. (PCParts) so all is compatible. I have had my machine apart so many times that I feel I could do it.
I am unsure about that endeavor as I am tied up with procedures. My nurse yesterday had an English accent and was surprise when I told her about my grandfather from Bolton because she just moved form there to here in MD. She said the commute from Liverpool to Queen's Hospital was 3 hours. I hope that is not what you do. :)

    Hi Peter

Keep the old one going and as I mentioned research, research, research the new one, maybe pre-built or custom is the way, depends on what you need and wish to spend.
Love to know who calls you on first power up, I'd love Katee Sackhoff to call?!

Yes OEM is from DELL, HP etc

No my commute is 20-30mins at best as I start at 7:30am and finish at 16:00 so miss rush hour traffic

    Hey David
Glad the nurse was wrong about the commute or maybe I misled her. I said you went from Liverpool to Queens Hospital.
Would you prefer OEM or not? Isn't it more restrictive?
As you say I may sound redundant but I figure it is better to be prepared for when this one dies. I have my options which I just need to clarify. I have been in touch with the companies and stores both retail and those that build. OS's, warranties etc.
I still cannot believe that keys and media are a thing of the past with this new activation and reset(that works) not to mention images. If you have a Windows rescue media why would you need installation media?
I have stick(.WIM) from tech bench for this beast but it would be useless with ta new machine. Anyway you can remove the picture of your love and have a relazxing weekend.

Me Peter in Royal Liverpool Hospital, work with folk from Queens Belfast and Moorfield's London.
Not fussed on OEM or Retail, as in general I go retail from MSDN. Retail gives a bit more scope to upgrading a PC.

I'll familiarize my nurse with your local.. Nice bird as you would say.

MSDN I believe is Microsoft Developer Network which you could use but could as as I am not a developer?
I hear you not to worry OEM but take retail if you can.
