I just installed cod4, when i go into servers i would try and play and move around and it would be lagging for me,my fps would drop down to the 20s or lower and then would end up freezing on me and i would have to restart my computer or it unfreezes in a min or less. its not my internet connection at all, i have tried cleaning up spyware updating my graphics card tried changing settings in the game. I would really appreciate if someone can help me..thanks.

Well 1st uninstall any unnecessary programs that you have, and i believe in a previous post you said you have zone alarm..i too sometimes have problems with it, but not often, i have mine on stealth mode, but i also have some advanced options checked off and it seemed to help. whats your ram for your computer? The proc/proc speed? graphics card?

Look towards the graphics card or drivers, although it sounds more like a graphics card problem itself

How about you post your system specs and OS and then we can determine if it's a lack of hardware power.
that way we can eliminate 50% of possibilities right off the bat.
No point in guessing it being the drivers if it turns out your GPU is simply not good enough etc etc.

No offense but any game runs almost perfectly at 30FPS, it's nice to have higher but once you get to 50FPS you would never be able to tell any difference any higher without a frame rate recorder such as Fraps. Your 200 is a ridiculous number and you're telling him if he's running less he needs a new video card is possibly one of the worst pieces of advice I've ever heard. I have an X6 and don't get those FPS, so you are telling me I need an x8?... No.
Many games max out at 50FPS. Basically anything over 30FPS to the naked eye looks as smooth as a movie..... since that is what movies run at.

As for FPS being effected by GPU, CPU and then internet is incorrect as well, the GPU/CPU would depend on the game, in COD it would most likely be GPU, in something like Command and Conquer it would more likely be CPU.
Internet doesn't effect FPS although it looks like the same effect. To tell if it's internet or hardware you can simply run the game in single player , if your frame rate is high but low in Multi player then chances are it's an internet issue, whether that be your connection or server issues or ports that need to be forwarded.

Oh my god, I just realised this is a 4 year old thread. Good one.

Approval? I was giving my advice just like you were. At no point did I say you were lying.
I am fully aware of the possibilities.
Unfortunately you seem to be under the impression the OP was looking for ultimate performace when I'm pretty sure he/she just wants to play at normal speed. As he mentioned he is only getting 20FPS, so that tells me he is a casual gamer looking for 30+fps.
the info you gave while wonderful is clearly beyond what the OP was asking and is something only the elitists attempt.

The reason I said it was bad advice is because even if he wanted to attain what you are suggesting you still have NO IDEA what system he is running. It could be something simple like a bug or virus or hidden prog causing the issue and for all you know he could be running state of the art equipment that was built for him and your advice is to change some files and if you don't hit 200fps then go and buy a new system.

Your post belongs in it's own thread because it is not a very helpful reply to this topic which is a casual gamer wondering why he is lagging.
Your suggestion is an upgrade tutorial, not a solution.
He could follow all your steps and still be having the same issue.

You seem to know what you are talking about so I'm sure you understand a lag issue can be caused by dozens of problems, but my point was that you have no idea what so ever what is causing the issue. You didn't even ask for specs or OS or if any other game is lagging or if it lags in single player as well as MP.

If you realised it was a 4 year old thread and just wanted to post what you did, then a new thread titled something like "Get the most out of your COD" would be called for.

As for being grown up, I am sir. I tried to help someone with an issue.

Basically a guy drives into my mechanic shop with an engine problem that I fix with a service.
The same guy drives into yours and you fit a NOS kit.

As for CPU/GPU usage, as I said, depends on the game. That IS fact and well tried and tested by millions of people over decades of games.
Like I said, a game like COD relies on GPU a game like C&C or even ARMA relies more on CPU.

Please don't jump down peoples throats on the defensive when you havn't answered the question at hand.

    The question: My game lags.
Your answer: Change this file and if you get less than 200fps then buy a new PC.

We here at MG's try to help people with PC issues, there is very little elitist talk here because this is the first place most people find who are having issues they do not know how to fix. If someone wanted to jack up the FPS to the heights you are talking about then it's a pretty sound notion that they already know why it's only running at 20 FPS.
We also try to help people fix issues WITHOUT having to go out and spend hard earned cash.

I appreciate your input and may look into it for myself but IMO in this particular case I still believe it was bad advice with little info of the actual situation.

Sorry, I'm not being mean or anything and if I came off as such then I apologize.

Although I would suggest a full more indepth post (in a new thread) or at least a link to a full tutorial for those who wish to do as you suggest, as it is a great idea and I'm quite sure makes a big difference to online gaming. That way it would get blown off as a "Why is my COD running at 20FPS?" thread.

    Happy Gaming :)

    Dammit, missed the edit.
I just wanted to add... As I said, I believe you have some great knowledge you can share and I for one welcome another brain to pick and hope you stay around to help those who need it (me included) when our own resources have depleted, would be good to have you onboard.

While you seem to have taken offence I assure you that was not my intent and relish the idea of swapping ideas with another gamer.

Good day to you sir :)
