    hi folks
This references a Dell Dimension 8400 running XP HOme SP3. No viruses or malware are indicated. Appears to be pretty clean except the USB 'died' on the user, and so far I can't determine root cause.

Before I default to thinking the USB controller component shorted out [which I have seen in the past], I'm wondering if a registry problem could have caused this? did some auto registry checks [ccleaner and glary] but none made a diff. uninstalled devices in windows, ran the chipset install utility [from Dell] but no diff.

After doing the above I plugged a usb drive into a port on the back wondering it I could awaken a response. the device powers up, but that's it. windows is oblivious to its presence.

    All guidance gladly received pls!
