Codecs

My windows media player is crashing alot after i uninstalled third party codecs to play a certain game, so now I'm looking for a decent site to DL a good codec pack, all sites seem to be disliked by PG
"Thieves/Fake-protowall.com AP2P" seems to come up every time I try to DL a codec!!

Codec packs usually cause more problems then they are worth. You should really be getting the codecs you need yourself. I mean there really isn't that many. Most people use AC3 sound with an xvid/divx video codec. That will be all you need 90% of the time.

If you have a .mkv or .ogg file then you need to get codecs for those as well, but a lot of people never use those formats.

 

what website do you recommend for the xvid/dvix codecs!

 

i have been using the combination of Nimo Codec pack and FFDSHOW for 2 years now and am able to play any file that comes my way.

Well it's up to you if you want to go with a codec pack, but they are known (Nimo being the worst) for messing up certain things in videos, since they install conflicting codecs with some things. Although that's not to say they dont' work at all, they should still work a fair amount of the time, but they are bad for causing syncing issues when playing something back as well.

If you don't mind just going with another player, just for video files, you could always try just getting VLC, it's what I use since alot of the video files i have are either .mkv or .ogm because of the embedded subtitles. That or the FFDshow, lazy mans mkv, and OGGsplitter codec packs for WMP.
